Search Engines

SIRS Discoverer Deluxe Web Site - This site requires a user number and password that can be given to you by your teacher. The right to use the site was funded by the Board of Education. At this site, you can search an online encyclopedia, use a dictionary or thesaurus, and search by subject to help you with your research.

Dog Pile - Dogpile.com makes searching the Web easy, because it has all the best search
engines piled into one. So you get better results from more of the web.

Fact Monster - This site has daily features such as : spelling bees, "today's birthday", "today in history", analogies of the day, games/quizzes, links to dictionaries, almanacs, and encyclopedias, and even has it's own search engine. Kids will have fun learning with this popular site!

Awesome Library - This site is a K-12 education directory of 14,000 reviewed resources, which include five percent in education. To be included in the directory, resources must be useful for parents, students, educators, and librarians.

Yahooligans - This is a search engine developed by Yahoo! for kids.

KidsClick! Web Search - This is a safe web search engine for kids developed by librarians.

Howard County Library - Visit the library from the comfort of your own home. Here you can search for books, see what books you have checked out, renew your books, or even apply for a library card.

Ask Earl - Students can ask Earl a question and he will search the Internet for the answer.

Google - A very powerful search engine!


Fun Stuff

Museum of Unnatural Mystery - Are there really flying saucers? What killed the dinosaurs? Check out these questions and more at this must see site.

J.K.Rowling Official Site - Immerse yourself in the world of J.K Rowling -- choose between English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Japanese.

I Know That - This site contains every subject area that you can imagine and students from Pre-K through 6th grade can enjoy it. Everything is interactive and will keep the student's attention!

VERBNow.com - Is your mom telling you to go out and play? Get ideas for getting active with the Game Generator, create your own virtual character, and get sports tips from pros.

American Sign Language Browser - Here you will be able to use a search engine to locate words and a Quick Time movie shows you the correct sign for the word using American Sign Language.

How Stuff Works - Just like the title says! This site tells you how all sorts of stuff works and more.

Grossology - Check out this oogy site to learn about"the science of really gross stuff."

100th Day of School - This web site has tons of links to web sites having to do with the celebration of the 100th day of school.


Language Arts

BookPALS: Storyline - Watch and listen as celebrities read books by some of your favorite authors, including William Steig and Patricia Polacco.

iKnowthat - Online Multimedia Educational Games for Kids 2-12. Contains interactive learning games for math, language arts, science, social studies, and much more!

Starfall - What a terrific site! Students from ages 2 - 10 will enjoy this site. They offer interactive areas that will help students learn their alphabet, learn phonics, and learn how to read.

Kids Clubhouse - This Houghton Mifflin sponsored site provides excellent child-centered activities. For example, brain teasers, a reading room, and additional fun activities. It also provides a variety of teacher resources to support and review instruction.

Winged Sandals - Take a tour through Greek mythology! You can watch animated stories, learn about gods, heroes, and monsters, play some fun games, or even ask the Oracle about your future.

Vocabulary - Test your vocabulary, no matter what your level is, with all types of games.

Hans Christian Andersen - An interactive website containing fairy tales online.

Curious George - Come and play with George and learn more about his books!

Merriam-Webster's Word Central - This site offers a cool student dictionary and Word of the Day, as well as new ways to have fun with words and language.

Between the Lions - This cool PBS site offers stories to read, games to play, and adventures to follow that will help you with Language Arts.

Saxon Publishers: Phonics Activities - Match up pictures with their appropriate words. This helps to support our Saxon Phonics program here at Ilchester.

The Children's Literature Web Guide - Contains topics such as features, quick references, and more links. This site categorizes the growing number of Internet resources related to books for children. It also provides links to various author's web pages.


Math

Math Magician - Are you a math magician? Test your skills with these math challenges.

Kids Numbers - Practice your math skills with electronic flash card drills and games that you can adjust to your level. Skills include addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and money.

It's My Life: Money - Even if you don't have a job yet, it's never too early to learn how to handle money, make it, or even spend it!

Primary Games - Test your math skills while playing various fun games.

Math Glossary - Get illustrated and animated definitions and explanations for math terms to help you with your homework.

All Math - Contains flashcards, multiplication tables, biographies of mathematicians, and a glossary of math terms.

Fun Brain - This site has over 50 educational games that kids love to play. Each game combines educational content with fun-to-play games. There are plenty of activities for kids to play that will help enrich their math learning. Enjoy math baseball, fresh baked fractions, operation order, and many more! Students in grades 1-8 will find this site enjoyable.

Web Math - Here you will not have to wait for a response to a mathematical question. You can get an instant response to your math problem or question by choosing the type of problem you are trying to solve and it will show you how to solve it.

MathStories.com - The goal of this math website is to help elementary and middle school children improve their math problem solving and critical-thinking skills. It has over 5,500 math word problems for children to enjoy! To use this site, however, you must become a subscriber.

Brain Teasers - This site is geared towards students grades three through eight and is sponsored by Houghton-Mifflin.Each Wednesday evening, they post a new Brain Teaser for each grade and post the answers a week later. They keep an archive of the questions so you have they opportunity to explore other Brain Teasers as well.

A+ Math - This is a collection of on-line games suitable for drill or reinforcement of basic math concepts and operations. The site has several different game formats for each basic operation. Each game is available in Java or non-Java versions. The Java versions are self-scoring. This is a good site for students in fourth through eighth grade.

AAA Math - This site offers a collection of interactive drill and practice exercises listed by grade level and topic area. The interactive features are attractive, though the drills simply give users the correct answer if they enter the wrong answer. For those who need the practice, these exercises could be useful. Good for students in grades three through twelve.

AIMS Puzzle Corner - The AIMS Education Foundation sponsors this site meant for students in grades 4-8. The puzzles are highly motivational tools that capture the imaginations of students. To infiltrate the classroom with a vibrant brand of problem solving, this site offers a tantalizing educational bait-and-hook in the form of a new puzzle each month. It clearly illustrates puzzles and solutions.

Coolmath - Here's a very complete collection of games and drills to reinforce dozens of math concepts for students in grades three through eight. This site includes several simulations that draw on multiple skills and require students to apply their knowledge in "real world" situations. There's much more than drill and practice here.

Aunty Math - Every other week, Aunty Math presents a new math challenge. Each challenge is presented in the form of a story and students in grades K-5 have to use their thinking and math skills to solve the various problems.

Math Journey - Travel around the world by answering math problems. The journey begins and ends in London, and has stops in 30 cities along the way. To board the plane to each new city, you must answer a math problem correctly. If you get a problem wrong, you have "missed your flight". Miss three flights and the game is over.

Patterns in Math - Children can visit the lab to explore logic patterns, number patterns, and word patterns. Through visual and written forms of expressions, students in K-5 will connect language and mathematics to develop skills for thinking clearly, strategically, critically, and creatively.

ASPCA Animal Land - This site has information on various animals, pet care info, animal-related games, cartoons, and some info on animal-related careers

Science Fair Central - Planning ahead for Ilchester's Science Fair? This site is a comprehensive guide that will help you and your child choose a project idea and follow it all the way through to the night of the fair.

Science 4 Kids - Visit this site for cool links to bacteria, bugs, and plants that like heavy metal.

Science Bob - Meet Bob, find cool experiments, get answers to your questions, and learn a lot about science!

Sandlot Science - Features visual oddities and optical illusions.

The Lab - Slap on your goggles and throw on your white coat because you're headed to the Lab. The Australian Broadcast Corporation's gateway to online science, this site features tons of news, puzzles, jokes, links, and more.


Social Studies

Time Warp Trio - Learn about 26 periods of U.S. and world history through games, interactive stories, biographies, quizzes, and more. Based on the book series by Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith.

American Rhetoric - Index to and growing database of 5000+ full text, audio and video (streaming) versions of public speeches, sermons, legal proceedings, lectures, debates, interviews, other recorded media events, and a declaration or two.

Ellis Island - As you move through this online exhibit developed by the Hostory Channel, you will experience Ellis Island as one of the over 12 million people who landed here, seeking to pass through this gateway to a life where hope replaced fear.

National Geographic for Kids - Read articles, play GeoBee, read about kids in the news, and much more with this site from National Geographic magazine.

Conquistadors - A PBS site that explores the conquests of the Americas. Be sure to check out the time lines!

History Mystery: The Civil Rights Movement - Developed by Scholastic, this site allows kids to learn about the Civil Rights Movement while solving a hisotry mystery!

Riding the Rails - This web site from PBS shows how the Great Depression affected 250,000 teenagers who were living on the road at this time in history.

Scholastic: History Mystery - Choose a quiz on many subjects and search to find the answers.
