The Library Media Center at Waterloo is dedicated to helping our students enjoy literature and find materials to enhance their learning in and out of the classroom.

Every class at Waterloo, from pre-school through fifth grade, visits the media center once each week. Pre-schoolers and kindergarteners visit for 20-30 minutes each time, in order to hear a story and check out books. First through fifth graders participate in many different activities during their 45-minute classes. They may: listen to literature that complements what they are learning in their various classes, research topics introduced in their science and social studies classes, using books, magazines and computers, learn how to find information in the media center and on the internet, create presentations using computer programs and other media, engage in evaluating various types of media.

Each student is encouraged to check out books from the media center. First graders can check out one book each week, second through fourth graders can check out two books, and fifth graders can check out three books. Books are checked out for two weeks and can be renewed for two additional weeks. Fourth and fifth graders can also check out magazines. If a book or magazine is lost or destroyed, payment must be made before a student can check out these materials again.

We hope parents will encourage their children’s love of reading by enjoying the media books with their children, discussing the types of books the children are choosing and reminding children to return their books on time.

We would like to remind parents that Howard County provides access to three excellent interactive websites that supply information children can use for information. They are Sirs Discoverer on the Web, World Book Online, and CultureGrams. Information has gone home providing the passwords for these websites. If you have lost this information, please contact the media center.

Parents are always welcome in the media center and should feel free to contact us if they have any questions about our media program.
