The second grade team is "soaring high"!
Second graders will be learning about the phases of
the moon, will have to design a clay boat that can float, and observe
the life cycle of the butterfly to name a few of the areas in science.
In social studies, second graders will be reading and creating maps,
understand the differences in communities, gain an understanding
about our country's monuments and symbols, while finishing the year
with economics.
In math, second graders are placed in flexible groups
based on their instructional needs. Some areas that are taught include
place value, addition with regrouping, subtraction with regrouping,
geometry, measurement, problem solving, and algebra. Our language
arts program is a balanced literacy program with skills being taught
at the appropriate level with authentic literature and anthologies.
Writing is ongoing and the students will use many of their writing
skills in the content areas as well as in written responses and
prompts.
A big event for second graders is the annual SAT10 testing. The students will take the SAT10 in April. Since this is a format that is relatively new to second graders, practice sheets may be sent home as a weekly homework assignment in addition to the math, spelling and reading.
Math and spelling homework is given every night Monday-Thursday.
Each second grader is asked to read every weeknight for 10 minutes
and to complete the M & M reading calendar. We would like to
see all of the students earn their way to the M & M Ball at
the end of the year.
Here is the Spelling Homework Schedule:
Monday – Cut and sort your spelling words. Glue them into your spelling journal when you are finished.
Tuesday – Find new words that fit each pattern for your sort. Include at least five words for each pattern
Wednesday – Use at least seven of your spelling words in a story, poem, or a friendly letter. Underline the words that you chose.
Thursday – Illustrate five of your spelling words. Then, have someone give you a practice spelling test. Remember you will be tested on the pattern and correct spelling of your words. Write any words that you missed three times. |
