Reading Recovery is a one-on-one early intervention program for first grade students. The primary goal of the Reading Recovery program is to accelerate the learning process in order for students to meet and maintain grade level language arts objectives. This individualized literacy program is supplemental to the daily reading and writing instruction provided by the classroom teacher. The students who participate in the Reading Recovery program receive thirty minute lessons on a daily basis for approximately 12-20 weeks of school. Student selection is determined by developmental reading level, performance on a battery of Reading Recovery assessments, and teacher recommendation. New students are selected as openings become available. Specific reading and writing strategies are taught throughout the child’s program and emphasis is placed on the strengths of each student. Students are encouraged to take risks as they learn to decode and comprehend increasingly harder levels of text. Communication between school and home positively influences the success of the program.
