Howard County
G&T Mission Statement
The Gifted and Talented Education Program supports the Howard County
Public School mission by ensuring excellence in learning and more closely
targeting the needs of the highly able population at St. John's Lane.
The G/T Mathematics program offers an accelerated and enriched program
that is advanced by at least two years. It is taught 5 days a week and
replaces the regular education math program. Students who successfully
complete this program will be prepared for Pre-Algebra in sixth grade.
Entrance into this program is done through testing. Students can be
nominated for testing by teachers and parents and testing occurs in February
prior to the coming school year.
Other opportunities for schoolwide enrichment are also available.
Interest groups or instructional seminars, offer students with the interest,
ability, and talent, the opportunity to develop their skills further in
endeavors such as participating in a student-led book club, running a
chess
club on the school club days, or possibly running student government.
Curriculum Extension Units offer opportunities for select students in
grades 2-5 to participate in prepared units which offer advanced level
reading and writing activities. These students are selected by teacher
recommendation and based on academic strenghts and performance on
assessments, standardized tests, and parent input. Selected students must
also have parental consent to participate because they will be removed
from
the classroom during the regular instruction time at least twice a week.
