English for Speakers of Other Languages
The ESOL program is an appropriate assistance program for meeting the needs of
the non-English Speaking and Limited-Speaking students. LEP students are seen
on a regular basis by an ESOL teacher and an instructional assistant. The number
of classes per week depends on the students proficiency level. The students are
worked with in the mainstream classes or through pull-out instruction. The instructional
program focuses on the four skill areas of listening, speaking, reading, and
writing.
The major goals of the ESOL program are:
Teaching sufficient English to students to enable them to successfully participate
in mainstream classes;
Developing or improving academic skills for students who have not had the opportunity
to attend school regularly;
Practicing academic skills necessary for rigorous performance and achievement;
and
Introducing students to school and social customs so that they can interact meaningfully
with others.
