Howard County Selection Criteria

*Materials for media centers may be purchased from the list of approved media purchasing sources maintained by the Media Services Office. Materials not previously considered may be purchased with written recommendations by three teachers, the media specialist, and Director of Instructional Resources. Such materials must be in agreement with established policies and selection criteria.

* Taken from Howard County Policy 2211 - Selection of Instructional Materials

Our Selection Criteria

  • Nonfiction materials are chosen for their text features, and fit to the curriculum.
  • Picture books must have pictures that enhance and support the text. Large illustrations make storytelling fun.

  • Fiction books must be age appropriate, up-to-date, contain good writing, and cover different genres.

  • All materials must be award-winning or found in review journals such as School Library Journal, Booklist, The Hornbook Guide, The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books, and lists such as Notable Children's Trade Books in the Field of Social Studies ( http://www.ncss.org/resources/notable/home.html ) and

  • Outstanding Science Trade Books for Children ( http://www.nsta.org/ostbc ).

  • Suggestions are always welcome from students and staff.
