art | media | music | physical education The Related Arts program is a valuable component of the curriculum, designed to expose students to a variety of activities that will broaden and enrich each student. The ultimate goal of the elementary school music programs is to build the strong foundation that is critical to a lifetime appreciation for and participation in the arts. Instrumental music is an elective program offered to third, fourth, and fifth graders. String instruction begins in the third grade and continues through fifth grade. Band instruction begins in fourth grade and continues to fifth grade. Students will receive one or two half hour lessons a week. During lessons students learn how to hold their instruments, how to produce a good tone, and how to read music. Band students use the Ed Sueta Band Method while string students study All for Strings. The physical education curriculum is designed to utilize skills and concepts that are involved in the various skill themes of games, rhythms, gymnastics, and fitness. In each area, an emphasis is placed on cooperative learning, critical thinking, fundamental movement patterns, and physical awareness. Teamwork, cooperation, sportsmanship, and respect are always reinforced. The ultimate goal of our PE program is for students to develop an appreciation of the many benefits of a lifetime of physical activity. In art, there are five areas of instruction: drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, and crafts. Students work both two and three dimensionally in these areas to learn about and make personal connections between their world and art. "The more you read, the more you'll know." The media program is designed to help all students to become locators, evaluators, and users of information to solve problems and satisfy their own curiosity. The mission of the library media program is to provide opportunities for students and staff to become more effective users of ideas and information. Each class receives weekly instruction and a time for book selection. |
