Happy Tuesday!! Wow, last week was a great week for the Hawks!! Our Girls’ Cross Country Team was County Champs (Boys 3rd) and our football team stayed unbeaten with a big win over Atholton. I hope to see you at the many games this week as teams compete in State Playoffs. I would also encourage you to attend our Drama Production, “The Matchmaker” this week, Nov. 4, 5, 6, 7 @ 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 8 @ 2 p.m. Our students have worked very hard and their performances are always incredible. The following information is being provided to help keep your informed.

The RHHS Theatre Arts Departments Announces Auditions for the Spring Musical, Me and My Girl
Audition Preparation Workshops In an effort to make auditions run more smoothly, we will offer some preparatory workshops.

MEDIA CENTER NEWS FROM RIVER HILL HIGH SCHOOL AND THE HOWARD COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY
A Howard County Public Library card is your free ticket to a wide range of information, education, and entertainment. With it you can access books, magazines, CD's, DVD's, and the Internet. Library databases and FREE online homework assistance are some of the valuable services that are provided for students. We are asking you as parents and guardians to encourage your children to secure a library card so that they can have all these terrific resources at their fingertips.
We also would like to tell you about our River Hill High Media Resources page, which is accessible by going to web.hcpss.org/~michael_ahr . This is also available on River Hill's official website, www2.hcpss.org/rhhs . Here you will find links to all of our online subscription databases, including Gale Student Resource Center, CultureGrams, SIRS Knowledge Source, World Book Online, ABC-CLIO, Summer Reading Lists, and the Howard County Public Library. Students can conduct research using periodicals and reference sources without leaving their home computer! Please note: a password is required to access these subscription databases from home; students should see a media staff member for a list of passwords.

Financial Aid Night: Financial Aid Night will be Monday, November 16 at 7pm in the Information Center. Dr. Herm Davis will be the presenter. He will be giving tips on how to fill out the FAFSA Form and explaining how financial aid is awarded. The Financial Aid Night originally scheduled for November 10th is canceled.
How to Pay for College-Congressman Elijah E. Cummings will host his 13th Annual “How to Pay for College” Seminar on Monday, November 9, 2009 from 5pm-7pm at the Enoch Pratt Free Library’s Central Branch, which is located at 400 Cathedral Street in Baltimore, Maryland. The Seminar will take place in Central Hall and the Wheeler Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public and light refreshments will be served.
Scholarships: LSU – LA-STEM Research Scholars Program: Louisiana State University, National Science Foundation, Research Corporation, and the Louisiana Board of Regents, is proud to once again offer the Louisiana Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (LA-STEM) Research Scholars Program. The goal is to promote diversity within the STEM disciplines by increasing the number of under-represented students seeking terminal (Ph.D.) degrees in the STEM disciplines. LA-STEM scholarships are among the most prestigious offered by LSU and are valued at up to $11,500 for the academic year for up to four years. However, the LA-STEM Research Scholars Program is much more than a scholarship. Students participate in courses designed to promote success, service projects, leadership opportunities, social programs, study groups, undergraduate research, and mentoring, enhancing their academic experiences once they arrive on campus. Students must demonstrate academic excellence and extraordinary potential for scholarly success. Applicants must be nominated by schools by November 15, 2009. Students are eligible to apply if they: Have completed their high school junior year, Have an academic record that meets the following criteria: -GPA must be 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 unweighted scale, -ACT of 24 or higher or SAT of 1100 or higher, Are U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents, Plan to pursue an undergraduate degree in a STEM discipline, Are interested in pursuing a terminal degree (Ph.D.) in a STEM discipline, Are interested in research and mentoring, Will contribute to the life and diversity of the STEM student body by supporting the goals of this program of respecting and learning from fellow students with diverse backgrounds and experiences. Applications must be submitted by December 15, 2009.
