Principal’s Update

Happy Thanksgiving!!   I hope that you and your family enjoy your time together during this special time of year.  I would like to congratulate our Girls’ Volleyball team for a great season – Bravo!!!!!  Congratulations also go out to our football team for advancing in the State Playoffs.   There will not be a Principal's Coffee this week due to the holiday, but hope to see you next month on Thursday, December 17.

Matt Beck – Winner of the 2009 Ravens Quarterback Award for community service

Matt received his well-deserved award and grant at a pre-game presentation at the Ravens game and was featured in the Ravens’ game day program.

MUSIC NEWS

RHHStival 2010!  The River Hill High School Department of Music will once again be hosting the RHHStival, an evening of music featuring local rock bands and emerging talent.  This year’s festival is scheduled for Friday, January 22, 2010 from 6:00p 11:00p.  Event and Ticket information will be available in early January.

Students interested in auditioning to perform in this year’s festival need to complete an application and submit a demo recording for consideration by Wednesday, December 23, 2009.  Applications are available online at www.riverhillmusic.org.

STUDENT SERVICES UPDATE

Study Skills Group: Mr. Vangeli and Mr. Overton will be conducting a study skills group that will meet for three sessions on Wednesdays, December 2, 9, and 16 from 2:20pm-3pm in Student services. If your child is interested in attending this group they need to make a commitment to all three sessions. To sign up your child please have them stop by Student Services for a Registration Form. If you have questions feel free to contact Mr. Vangeli or Mr. Overton.

CAP and Gown Ordering: If you forgot to turn in Cap and Gown order form you are in luck. The representative of National Quality Products will be at River Hill on Wednesday, December 2 and Thursday, December 3 during all lunch shifts (10:20am-12:20pm) to collect forms and answer questions. If you need a form they are available in the Student services Office.

Attention Senior Males: Young men must register for Selective Service within 30 days of their 18th birthday (this includes U.S. Citizens living abroad and non-citizen immigrant males ages 18-25 residing in the U.S.). Selective Service keeps a list of men who might be called on to serve our country in a national emergency.  By registering for selective service you open yourself up to receiving financial aid for college, receiving Federal Job training, a Federal Job, and United States Citizenship, if you were not born in the United States. It is a felony not to register that is punishable by up to 5 years in prison and up to $250,000.00 in fines. Go to www.sss.gov to register. You can also register by going to your local post office and completing a registration form.

Scholarships:

Columbia Association Spirit of Columbia Scholarship: The Columbia Association Board of Directors instituted a scholarship program to offer up to six $2,500 education awards to graduating high school seniors who exhibit exceptional efforts in providing community service in the Columbia area.  Student who attend a Howard County public or private school, live in Columbia and maintain a C average, are eligible to apply for the scholarship award. Eligibility Criteria: Exhibit exceptional efforts in community service to benefit Columbia residents. Be a June 2010 graduating senior from an accredited public, private, or parochial high school in Howard County. Reside on assessment paying property or have a parent/guardian who works full-time on CA assessed property. Have a cumulative GPA of C or better (2.0). Submit proof of acceptance to full-time post secondary school program (college or technical) before receipt of the award. Call 410-715-3175 for a verification form if parent/guardian works, but does not live, on assessed property. Applications are in the guidance office.  Applications must be submitted by March 1, 2010. Applications are also available on the website www.columbiaassociation.com or by calling 410-715-3175.
