Principal’s Update
10/8/07

Dear Parents,

Homecoming week has arrived.  Our students are excited and have worked hard to prepare for this week.  I have included a list of the all the activities with this update.  We hope you can join us for many of these events.  It makes each event special when our parents are out in force supporting the students.  Enjoy the week.

Congratulations!!

With another great performance Saturday night "under the stars" at Centennial High School, the River Hill Marching Band won 1st place in Group III with a high score of 82.70.  This was also the high score for all 10 bands competing in the USSBA competition.  River Hill also won all caption awards in Group III, with Best Color Guard, Best Music, Best Percussion, Best Visual, and Best Effect.

River Hill is currently ranked number 1 among Group III Bands in USSB

Financial Aid Night
On Thursday, November 1, 2007 at 7pm in the Information Center the guidance office will be hosting a Financial Aid Information session. Dr. Herm Davis will be presenting information on the FAFSA Form and how colleges determine eligibility for Financial Aid.

Organizational Workshops for Students
S.O.A.R., our peer tutoring program, and the Guidance Office are pleased to offer Organization Workshops on the 2nd & 4th Tuesday of each month from 2:15 - 3:15 in Room 135.  Students should sign up in advance in the S.O.A.R. binder in the Guidance Office.  Peer tutors will provide one-on-one assistance with getting backpacks and notebooks organized.  Materials will be provided to assist students with their organizational skills and strategies to stay on top of their paperwork.

Geometry Workshop
The PTSA is pleased to offer a FREE Geometry workshop on October 10th from 2:30 - 4:30 in Room 255.  No advanced sign up is required.  This is open to 10th and 11th graders who have completed Geometry and may just need a little refresher session prior to taking the PSAT.

Seniors and PSAT Day
On PSAT Day, Wednesday, October 17th, seniors have 3 options for the morning.  They may participate in workshops at Howard Community College.  A special program will be available for current high school seniors.  We ask that parents send in a note in advance for students choosing this option.  Students may also schedule a college visit for that morning or day; again, we ask that a parent send in a note in advance stating the college to be visited.  All seniors who are not participating in the above visits should report on time to the Information Center.  English teachers will be available to critique college essays, computers will be available to fill in on line applications, a Counselor will be available to review Academic Resumes and to assist with college searches and questions.  Students may also use this time to use the Information Center resources for projects and to do work for classes.  Our goal is that all seniors are accounted for on this day.

Jefferson Scholars Foundation Scholarship
The Jefferson Foundation seeks to find high school seniors who possess exceptional ability in leadership and scholarship and who show promise of making a significant contribution to the University community as students and to society at large as graduates.

The Foundation pays directly to each recipient a stipend sufficient to cover the full cost of attending the University of Virginia.  The year the award totals $18,875 for Virginians and $38,125 for non-Virginians; the Foundation is prepared to renew the stipend each semester for four years of study at the University.

If interested in being nominated or would like more information please see Mrs. Pizzo in guidance by October 30th 2007.

Schedule Changes
The guidance office will no longer be honoring requests for schedule changes. All students are expected to attend their current classes. If a student is struggling in a class they can meet with their teacher for extra help, they can sign up for peer tutoring, they can request a list of private tutors, or they can meet with their counselor to discuss strategies for improvement.
