Dear Parents,
Homecoming week will soon be here. Our students are excited and are working hard to prepare for this week. I have included a list of the all the activities with this update. Class Selected Board Games 9th Grade: Battleship 10th Grade: Operation Class of 2013 News Thank you to everyone who helped make the Class of 2013 Joe Corbi's Fundraiser a huge success! We raised over $2,300 for the freshman class!
The orders will be delivered on Tuesday, October 13. We are in need of parent volunteers to help pass out the food items to sellers. Please contact us immediately if you are available to help for any period of time between the hours of 1 and 6 pm on October 13.
Any items that are not picked up between the designated hours on Tuesday, October 13 will be donated to those less fortunate. Thank you again for your help and support of River Hill's Class of 2013!

Items needed: Styrofoam, news papers, Elmer’s glue, Glitter (any colors), red electrical tape, ribbon (all colors), Tinsel, chicken wire, twine, batting (pillow case stuffing), colored balloons, cardboard, ply-wood, colored cellophane, and any colored paint and brushes. (Paint can be old house paint, we will take any colors!)
MTHS Membership Drive
The River Hill chapter of the Maryland Technology Honor Society (MTHS) is currently taking applications for new members. This organization offers opportunities for members to further their knowledge and interests in technology and science. Through formal dinner meetings, MTHS invites professionals from the industry and academia to speak about recent developments and their experiences in the field. By asking questions, giving feedback, and holding discussions, members become active voices in tomorrow’s world of science and technology. Members also sponsor the River Elementary School Technology Fair in the spring. There are many opportunities for leadership experience within the organization.
If you are a sophomore or junior with a 3.4 GPA and a strong interest in science and technology please complete an application.

Softball Fundraiser: Recycling Ink Cartridges, Cell Phones, Laptop Computers, iPods, and Digital Cameras
The River Hill Softball team is now recycling laptop computers, iPods, and digital cameras in addition to cell phones and empty ink cartridges. Cartridges are found in printers, fax machines, and desktop copiers. The softball team gets money for every item turned in. Please help support your Lady Hawks Softball Team.
**All laptop computers sent in have their hard drives immediately removed and destroyed. You may remove and keep your own hard drive.
For your convenience, there is a drop off box in the front office or you can have your student give them to Ms. Rosenbaum. There are also pre-paid plastic envelopes that have been provided by RecycleFund.com to send in your inkjet cartridges and cell phones. If you need envelopes, please e-mail me and I will send them home with your student.

College Essay help for seniors: On Wednesday, October 14, PSAT Day, English teachers will be available in the Information Center to read student essays and offer advice. The help will be provided from 7:25am-10:30am, during the PSAT exam. Help will be on a first come first serve basis and students should bring four copies of their essays.
ASVAB Exam at River Hill: The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery will be offered at River Hill High School on Monday, October 26 at 7:25am. Please email Mr. Mike Cohee at mcohee@hcpss.org if you would like your child to take this exam.
Howard County College Fair: Atholton High School will be hosting the Howard County College Fair on Sunday, October 18 1pm-4pm. Over 100 Colleges are expected to attend.
Financial Aid Night: Financial Aid Night will be Monday, November 16 at 7pm in the Information Center. Dr. Herm Davis will be the presenter. He will be giving tips on how to fill out the FAFSA Form and explaining how financial aid is awarded.
Scholarships:
Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program: Comcast is pleased to announce the 2010-2011 Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program. This program, funded through the Comcast Foundation, recognizes high school seniors from Comcast communities for their commitment to community service, academics, and demonstrated leadership. To acknowledge these accomplishments, recipients of the award will receive a one-time grant of $1,000 for use towards college costs and expenses. River Hill may nominate only one senior to apply for the award. Requirements: Full-time high school senior currently enrolled at a high school within a Comcast Community. Student GPA of 2.8 or higher. Demonstrate leadership abilities in school activities or through work experiences. Strong commitment to an involvement in community service. Plan to attend an accredited, nonprofit college, university, or vocational/technical school in the United States. Employees of Comcast, its subsidiaries and affiliates, and their families are not eligible. If interested in being nominated you must see Mrs. Pizzo in the Student Services Office by November 20th with a resume.
RIT Computing Medal and Scholarship Program for Juniors: Recognized as a leader in computing education, RIT established the Computing Medal and Scholarship Program to recognize high school juniors who have distinguished themselves academically, are active and involved member of their school and community, and demonstrate interest and ability in computing. Students selected to receive the Computing Medal are eligible for a $24,000 RIT Computing Medal Scholarship ($6,000 per year) if they: are accepted for admission to a baccalaureate level (BS or BFA) program at RIT, enroll at RIT full time in the fall immediately following their high school graduation. Students may use this scholarship to pursue any of the baccalaureate degree programs available in RIT’s eight colleges. Each school may nominate one male and one female student who: are pursuing a rigorous college-preparatory curriculum, rank in the top 10 percent of their junior class, are involved as leaders in their school and/or community, and demonstrate an interest and ability in computing. If interested in being nominated please see Mrs. Pizzo in the Student Services Office by May 3, 2010 with a resume.

Randolph College – Scholarships: Randolph College academic awards recognize students who have attained a high level of scholarship and exhibited talent and strong citizenship. They offer scholarships and academic awards up to full tuition scholarships. Students transferring from other colleges are also considered for academic scholarships. All awards are renewable annually, based on achievement of satisfactory grade point average and committee review. Awards may be applied to Randolph College-sponsored study-abroad programs. For priority consideration for the Presidential Scholars Program, a completed application for admission must be received in the Admissions Office by December 1, 2008. Finalists will be invited to campus for interviews and a special program. Additional scholarships are also available. An application to Randolph serves as a scholarship application. Student receiving a scholarship are notified at the time of their admission. If interested in being nominated for Presidential Scholars Program see Mrs. Pizzo in the Student Services office by October 23, 2009
