Principal’s Update

Dear Parents,

All is well on the hill. Congratulations to our SGA for a successful Fall Leadership Conference. All of our student leaders had the opportunity to meet and continue their collaboration, which started last year during our Spring Leadership Conference. Our keynote speaker this fall was County Executive Ulman who gave students a wonderful speech on leadership.

The following information is being provided to help keep you informed.

Purse Stolen
One of our parents had her purse stolen at the Football Game Friday night. We are currently checking our security cameras and investigating the incident. If you have any information, please contact our SRO – Officer Gick at 410-313-7120.

Luggage for Foster Care Children
Have extra luggage lying around? Donate it to foster care children who really need it! Contact Lisa Dunn at dunnbb@comcast.net or call 301-596-9217 to arrange pick-up.

School Pictures
: You should be receiving School Picture information in the very near future. Pictures will be taken 11/11 – 11/12 during English classes.

Student Services Update:

Fall College Night: On Wednesday, September 30 the River Hill Student Services Office will be sponsoring a College Night program. The program begins at 7pm in the Auditorium with information from Mr. Philip Vangeli, the Counseling Department Team Leader and then continues at 7:25pm with breakout sessions. The breakout sessions will feature information sessions on college athletics, financial aid, Military Academy appointments, Making the most of your college visits, UMBC, UMCP, McDaniel College, Howard Community College, and College for students with disabilities. There will be an opportunity for each participant to attend two breakout sessions. The program is open to students and parents in grades 9-12. If you have questions please contact Mr. Vangeli in the Student Services Office.

ASVAB Exam at River Hill: The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery will be offered at River Hill High School on Monday, October 26 at 7:25am. Please email Mr. Mike Cohee at mcohee@hcpss.org if you would like your child to take this exam.

Howard County College Fair: Atholton High School will be hosting the Howard County College Fair on Sunday, October 18 1pm-4pm. Over 100 Colleges are expected to attend.

Maryland Student Page Program: River Hill High School can nominate one senior to participate in the Maryland General Assembly Student Page program. Each selected page will serve two nonconsecutive weeks in either the House of Delegates or the State Senate. If you would like to be considered for this program please see Mr. Vangeli in the Counseling Office for an application. The application deadline is Friday, October 2.

Choose Civility Poster Challenge: The HCPSS Office of Student Services challenges the students at your school to design and create artwork to promote the 2009/2010 theme “Choose Civility – the Power of One”. Criteria
Poster Size: 8 1/2 x 11 horizontal or vertical
Media: Marker, colored pencil, or paint
Image: Hand drawn, original student ideas and artwork (no computer generated pictures or photos, etc.)
Overall Artwork: Artwork should clearly convey “Choose Civility – The Power of One” theme.
The contest is open to all HCPSS students grades K-12. Each submission should include the student’s name, grade level and school on the reverse side of the artwork.
*Each school may submit a total of 2 winners for countywide consideration. Entries must be submitted to Karen Kawahara, Office of Student Services by October 30th 2009. Countywide prizes will be awarded to one winner from grades, K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. The Grand Prize winner will have their poster reproduced for countywide distribution.
