Dear Parents,
Happy Monday!! Special congratulations go out to our Girls’ Basketball Team for a great season. They lost a tough State Championship game but should be proud of all they accomplished this year. Even though we did not win the game, we did win the Sportsmanship Award. Our fans, parent, coaches and parent should be proud of this recognition because it shows that we have great character even in defeat!!!
Our wonderful Drama Department will have it spring production, Annie Get You Gun, this week. They have worked hard and I am sure their performance will be exceptional. Hope to see you at one of the performances. Show times were sent in a previous e-mail.
The following information is being provided to help keep you informed. Have a great week.

Congratulations to Matt Steinberg! Matt entered an essay contest sponsored by the Howard County Commission for Women. This year's theme was "Taking the Lead to Save the Planet" and required the applicants to describe either a contemporary or historical woman who has excelled in protecting the environment and our planet. Matt wrote about Mrs. Lower, our outstanding science teacher. The commission chose 2 winners (1 winner from grades 6-8 and 1 from grades 9-12) and Matt was the High School winner. Matt read his essay during the Women's Hall of Fame induction ceremony at the Howard Community College and was given a $200 bond.
Congratulations to Ms. Miller and the Science Olympiad Teams who recently hosted the regional competition at River Hill!
RHHS placed FIRST in the Regional competition this past Saturday. The tournament was held here at River Hill and we housed over 120 students. Our 2-fifteen member teams won 11 First place medals, 9 Second place medals, and 3 Third place medals. The team competed against other Maryland schools (including Centennial, Marriotts Ridge and Atholton) in 21 events in Science, Technology, Math and Engineering.
Our team is very thankful to all of the teachers and parents who have helped our team be so successful. It would not be possible without the dedication from so many people. We had teachers here write exams. We had teachers and parents come in to judge events. The science department supplied all of the materials we needed as well as the technology equipment from the Information Center and we had tons of Student Volunteers from NHS who were invaluable. And of course, Ms. Della and her awesome crew that helped us set up and clean up! Mr. Tim Ryan, our coach of the year, met with each student doing the construction events; a huge part of our competition.
We also had judges from Johns Hopkins University and University of Maryland so it was quite exciting. We were also lucky to have two members from the Board of Education come as well as a representative from the science office (Deb Batzer) to do our Awards ceremony.
Congratulations to both River Hill Science Olympiad Teams and good luck at States on March 28, 2009. Keep Studying!!!
