Dear Parents,

Happy Tuesday!!  All is well on the Hill.  Sports playoffs are in full
swing.  Our Drama department will be performing Thoroughly Modern
Millie next week.  Our students have worked hard on this performanc e
and they would appreciate a large crowd.

Congratulations to the following individuals and groups for their

·        Boosters' Meeting Rescheduled

Due to last week's weather, the February Booster meeting is
rescheduled for THIS Wednesday, February 27, 2008 at 7:00p.m. in the
RHHS cafeteria.  All are welcome.  We look forward to updates from
team and club representatives, playoff information, and upcoming
events for Spring sports and clubs.

·        Class Rings

Attention 10th graders!
Ring order packets have been handed out!  Rings can be ordered March
4th, 5th, 6th, 12th and 13th during all lunch shifts.  Rings can also
be ordered on March 4th and 5th in the evening from 4-7pm.  As an
added bonus this year, the class of 2010 has thrown in a free t-shirt
with the purchase of a class ring!

Come see Ms. Romano in room 150 if you have not yet received your ring
ordering packet.  Don't miss out on a once in a life time opportunity!

·        History Day

River Hill High School's National History Day competition/exhibits
will be held Wed., Feb. 27, 2008 from 6:00pm-8:00 pm in our
Information Center. This year's topic is "Conflict and Compromise."
You are invited to come and see research on topics like:  Where our
nation's Capital should be located (the burning question in the
1700's); a look into Ronald Reagan's presidentcy (jellybeans and all);
Woodstock and its influence on youth of the 60's; Why the Bald Eagle
instead of the chicken?  So come by and share with us, documentaries,
exhibit boards, research papers, websites and the conversation of MANY
History Day student participants as they defend their take on CONFLICT
AND COMPROMISE through History!!!

·        NHS Induction Rescheduled

Attention All NHS Members, Preliminaries, and Parents:
The NHS Induction ceremony has been rescheduled fo r Tuesday, March
25th.  Rehearsal, which involves all members and preliminary members,
will take place immediately after school on the 25th.  Students need
to return to school by 6:30 p.m. for the induction ceremony, which
begins at 7.  Following the ceremony, a short reception will take
place in the student dining center.

·        Science Olympiad

The Science Olympiad is a National organization that provides
invitational, regional, state, and national tournaments. The rigorous
academic interscholastic competitions consist of a series of
individual and team events between the various science disciplines of
biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, and technology.

The purpose of a Science Olympiad team is to motivate students to
expand their knowledge and competence in science and technology and
increase their insight into the investigative process by enabling them
to "do" science through hands-on and inquiry-based exploration.

The RHHS Science Olympiad Team competed in their second Invitational
Tournament Feb. 23, 2008 at James Madison High School in Virginia and
placed in 10 events winning 20 medals and placed 5thin the overall
competition.  In preparation for their events they have been working
closely with their teachers. Math teachers like Mr. Demaree, science
teachers like Ms. Jewett, Ms. Chamness, Ms. Bradford, Ms. Martin, Mr.
Dibler and the awesome engineering teacher, Mr. Ryan are just some of
the teachers helping the team members at lunch, before and after
school.

The Olympiad team competes at States at John Hopkins University on
April 5, 2008. If they qualify at States they then will return to The
George Washington University May 30 and 31 to compete at the National
level.


·        GUIDANCE UPDATE


Attention Juniors: Any Junior who is planning to be a Teacher's aide
for the 2008-09 School Year should stop by guidance to pick up an
Aiding application Attention Juniors: The guidance office has received
applications for the Maryland Distinguished Scholars Talent in the
Arts scholarship program. There are five categories in which students
may be nominated for talent competition:  visual arts, instrumental
music performance, vocal music performance, dance and drama.  The
talent competition is only open to high school juniors who have been
nominated by their high schools.  Each high school is allowed five
nominees. Completed applications must be turned in to Mr. Overton in
Guidance by Thurs. Mar. 6, 2008. Auditions for Talent in the Arts will
take place Tues. Mar. 11, 2008.  Students should see their counselor
if they have questions.

Spring College Night:        The Guidance Office will be presenting a
College Information Night program on Monday, March 10 at 7pm in the
Auditorium. Topics covered include: The Transcript Request process,
the Application process, What college are looking for, NCAA
Clearinghouse, SATs, Campus Visits, Interview Tips. Program open to
parents and students.

2008 Youth Entrepreneur of the Year by Junior Achievement
Junior Achievement of Central Maryland is pleased to announce it will
be taking applications for the Entrepreneur of the Year award from
February 11, 2008 to March 7, 2008.  The goal is to recognize high
school students who have best embraced the entrepreneurial spirit in
the Central Maryland Region. Student must be currently enrolled in the
9th-12th grade at an accredited school or course of study in one of
the following counties: Maryland- Alleghany, Anne Arundel, Baltimore
City, Baltimore, Carroll, Frederick, Harford, Howard, Kent, Queen
Annes and Washington. Student must have started and run their own
business. Student must have outstanding public speaking abilities –
winner MUST BE AVAILABLE  to speak on Thursday, June 19, 2008 at the
Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Awards at the Inner Harbor.
Applications, short essay questions, and letters of recommendation are
due to Junior Achievement's Office of Central Maryland at the close of
business on Friday, March 7, 2008.  Applications and more information
are available in the guidance office.

Maryland Association of Elementary School Principals Scholarship
The Maryland Association of Elementary School Principals (MAESP) is
very pleased to offer a scholarship to prospective elementary school
teachers.  The scholarship award is in the amount of $1,000.  The
recipient must attend a college, trade school, or university in
Maryland to be considered for the award.   Applicants must: 1.
Complete an application. Please note: The information packet and
application form may be obtained and filled out on-line by visiting
www.wcboe.k12.md.us. Click on "Schools." Click on "Elementary." Scroll
to fountain Rock Elementary and Click on "More Info".  Click on "Ken
Mann Scholarship Information." Print out the finished copy. Deadline
for applying: April 9, 2008 (applications post marked after 4/9/08
will not be considered)

Earl Slacum Scholarship – Rockburn Elementary School PTA
Earl Slacum was the first principal of Rockburn Elementary School
(RES) and is an outstanding educator and leader in Howard County.  The
Rockburn PTA is proud to offer a one time $500 scholarship to a former
RES student who is pursuing a post high school education at any
college, university, trade, technical, or junior college.  To be
considered for this scholarship, applicants must: Be a senior
attending a public high school in Howard County. Have attended
Rockburn Elementary School (RES) for at least 1 reporting period. Have
a 2.5 or higher cumulative GPA as well as demonstrate consistent
participation in extra curricular or work related activities.The RES
PTA Scholarship Committee must receive the completed application form,
the Essay, Transcripts, and two scholarship recommendations Forms by
April 1, 2008. Applications are available in the guidance office.

BCF – Baltimore Community Foundation Scholarship: Scholarships are
available to study arts, music and more.  There i s an easy
application to complete. Awards are available for students residing in
the greater Baltimore metropolitan area, Baltimore City and Calvert
County. Visit www.bcf.org and click on Our Grants to download an
application today.  Applications are due March 1, 2008

Joseph Fox, Jr. Memorial Scholarship
The Joseph Fox, Jr. Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to graduates
of any Maryland high school and one college/university graduate
student majoring in reading or reading-related field.  Recipients of
this scholarship must attend accredited educational institutions of
their choice and pursue a curriculum that will prepare them for
teaching as well as meet the specific criteria for each scholarship.
This scholarship is for the amount of one thousand dollars ($1,000).
Selected Recipients will receive the scholarship upon presentation of
a copy of a college/university bill. Must maintain a GPA of 3.2 or
better in high school
Applications must be postmarked by April 15, 2008.  Applications are
available in the guidance office.

The Robert Davidson Scholar Athlete Awards – Rotary Club of Columbia
The Rotary Club of Columbia is pleased to announce that applications
for the 2008 Robert Davidson Scholar Athlete Awards are currently
available.  This is the 23rd year of these awards, which are made to
graduating seniors from high schools in Howard County. Scholarships of
$2,000 each will be given to the top male and female applicants, along
with special plaques for display in the winners' high schools for the
following year.  There will be two runner-up scholarships of $1,000
each also awarded.  All eligible seniors are encouraged to apply, as
there are no restrictions on either the number of entrants or winners
who can come from any one high school. The deadline for receipt of the
application is Tuesday, April 1, 2008.  For further information and to

The Links, Incorporated Scholarship
The Columbia Maryland chapter of the Links, Incorporated, an African
American Women's Organization will award two $1500.00 academic
scholarships.  The scholarship will be awarded to two Howard County
Public School graduating seniors.  Must have a cumulative grade point
average of at least 3.0 and be involved in community activities. The
Deadline for receipt, of your application is April 21, 2008.
Applications are available in the guidance office.

David Tripp Scholar/Athlete Awards – HoCo Striders Inc.
Applications are now being accepted for the David Tripp
Scholar/Athlete Awards.  These awards, which totaled $4,000 in 2007
and are merit (not need) based, will be granted to Howard County
residents who are graduating seniors from any high school in Howard
County.  The intention is to recognize both male and female winners as
well as runners-up, provided that there are deserving candidates.  The
criteria for consideration include outstanding achievements in the
classroom and as a runner in cross country, track and/or road races.

receipt of applications is Tuesday, April 1, 2008.  If you have any

Kiwanis Club of Columbia – Teenager of the Year
The Kiwanis Club of Columbia is seeking nominations for Columbia's
Teenager of the Year.  The purpose of this award is to give
recognition to a deserving teenager for his/her academic achievements,
citizenship, service to his/her school and community, character and
leadership performance.The finalist will receive a scholarship of
$1,000 to be paid to the school of his/her choice.  The selected
finalist will also have the chance to apply for the Kiwanis Capital
District Teenager of the Year award.Applications must be post marked
no later than Monday, March 31, 2008.  Applications are available in
the guidance office and at www.columbiakiwanis.com

Howard County Association of Educational Office Professionals (AEOP)
This scholarship is designed to assist business education student who
wish to continue their education and pursue office-related careers,
preferably in the educational field. Applications and more information
are available in the guidance office.   Applications must be
postmarked no later than April 15, 2008.
