Mission: The mission of the Howard County School Library Media Program is to provide opportunities for students and staff to become effective users of ideas and information.
Hours: The Library Media Center is open between 9:15am and 4:15pm daily. Students are allowed to check out books during their media class time or at other times, with the classroom teacher’s permission. Books may be returned at any time during the week.
Circulation: Each student is encouraged to check out books from the media center. Grades K-1 may check out one book each week, grades 2-5 may check out two books each week. Fourth and fifth grade students may elect to check out a magazine as one of their book choices. If a book or magazine is lost or destroyed, payment must be made before a student can check out the materials again.
Instruction: Each class (grades 1-5) visits the Library Media Center once each week for 45 minutes. Kindergarten visits the Library Media Center once each week for 30 minutes. The media curriculum teaches students an appreciation of literature and the skills necessary to locate, use, synthesize, apply, evaluate, and share skills. In an information age, these skills are essential for student progress throughout the schooling process and are a vital component of lifelong learning.
Parents are always welcome in the media center and should feel free to contact us if they have any questions about our media program.
Online Databases: We would like to remind parents that Howard County provides access to three excellent interactive web resources children can use for information. They are Sirs Discoverer on the Web, World Book Online, and Culture Grams. Please contact the media center for the passwords.
