Structure of the Performing Ensembles

At Patapsco, we have many opportunities for students to learn to perform music. We have two choirs, two string orchestras, three concert bands, a symphony orchestra, two jazz bands, and various small ensembles. The choirs, orchestras, and bands will meet during the school day. The symphony orchestra will meet Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 7:30 am. The jazz band will meet Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings. A second jazz band will meet Mondays after school. Before and after school rehearsals may be scheduled at the discretion of the director prior to concerts and festivals.

Students will have the option to participate in two in-school groups if they choose. Students wishing to participate in more than one ensemble will split their time in the two classes.

Students participating in a band and orchestra will also receive semi-private instruction weekly on their instruments. This will occur on a rotating schedule published monthly by the directors.

Depending on the response, we will have a winter solo / small ensemble recital for any interested students to display their talents. This will also be an excellent preparation for those students participating in the Howard County Solo/Ensemble festival in February.
