Chair Positions and Part Assignments

Chair positioning, part assignment, and soloist selections must be at the discretion of the director. In the process of making these selections, there are many complicated factors involved. Student ability changes daily. Different students have different strengths and weaknesses. One student who has strong leadership ability and great rhythm may be sitting in the highest seat, but another student, who has a better tone. might be chosen for a solo. These decisions have no consequence on the quality of music education for any child. A student sitting in the first chair or section will receive the same instruction as a student sitting in the second chair or section. Challenging for chairs will be allowed on a limited basis if deemed appropriate by the director. If a student is concerned about a seating position or section, we will encourage them to accept that what is needed for the group to sound better as a whole is more important than individual accomplishments. Encourage the students to be accepting and cooperative. Your support in this is crucial for limiting conflicts and promoting cohesion in the ensemble.
