Above & Beyond Awards

Established over 30 years ago, Oakland Mills (OM) enjoys a reputation as a Columbia high school whose students have distinguished themselves as academically accomplished, artistically gifted, and athletically renowned. The vision of Oakland Mills High School is to offer a learning experience that will prepare our community to compete, to adapt, and to contribute to an increasingly global and technological society. Our diverse community that is committed to helping each other grow academically, socially, and emotionally. We instill respect, responsibility, and integrity, while collaboratively empowering our students toward achievement. Our values are Pride, Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, Diversity, and Empowerment (P.R.I.D.E). The school currently has a student body of about 1200 students and a staff strength of 155. Oakland Mills is truly hOMe.

Title
The name of the program shall be known as The Above and Beyond Awards with the acronym, A & B Awards.

Purpose
Each and every day in our school, staff members make outstanding contributions in the education of our young people that too often go unnoticed. That is why we feel the need to identify and honor our distinguished colleagues who make a difference in the lives of our students and the school community. This unique program recognizes and rewards the individual staff members in our school community, who give unselfishly of their time, effort, and energy. These distinguished staff persons are honored for encouraging innovative teaching and learning in the school as well as for their vision, courage, and passion in accelerating the academic achievement and brightening the future of our kids.

Target Population
The A & B Awards program is for the benefit of all staff members of Oakland Mills High School regardless of position or duty. This includes administrative, teaching and instructional, clerical, security, support, custodial, military, and cafeteria staff.

Evidence of Need
When staff members report to work daily and exceed at their profession in service to the students, it is only but proper and justified to acknowledge and thank them for their abundant hard work, courage, and sense of sacrifice. At the present time, there exists no other such program for staff.

The Awards
The award(s) shall consist of the following:

  • A framed certificate
  • A designated and reserved staff parking space
  • An individualized engraved name plate on perpetual plaque
  • A lapel pin

Procedure
A nomination form will be completed by the nominator who must be a member of the Oakland Mills High School community. The nominator may be a colleague, a parent, or a student. A person may nominate themselves or someone else. On the nomination form, the nominator shall indicate the reason(s) for nomination which shall be significant, exemplary, and outstanding. They must reflect the vision and mission as well as the values P.R.I.D.E. It shall also include a vivid description or presentation of the innovative plan, classroom activity or project, research undertaking or related set of activities.

Such activities should among other things:

  • Stimulate/motivate all student
  • Offer equal access to all students
  • Address perceived and identified curricular needs
  • Address real life situations
  • Involve the community
  • Involve collaboration between departments and disciplines
Awards will be presented during the monthly general staff meetings.

Selection Committee
A selection committee comprising seven (7) staff members (with two serving as alternates) representing the entire community shall be selected. It shall be charged with reviewing nominations and selecting the winner(s). Each nomination form shall be scored. The nominee(s) with the highest score shall be declared the winner(s). The following shall be permanent members of the selection committee: Dr. Bama, Mr. Browne, Mr. Goode, Ms. Phillips, and Ms. Pecor. Alternate members: Dr. Neugebauer and Ms. Jackson. The committee shall meet once a month to review the nominations.

Submitting Form
Nomination forms shall be accepted and awarded on an on-going basis. Once completed, nomination forms may be submitted directly online or to Ms. Jackson, Principal’s Secretary.
