H1N1 Consent Forms

Students are receiving parental consent forms for the H1N1 vaccination in 6th period classes; please ask your student for the form this evening. If you choose to have your student participate, please sign the form and have the student return it to his/her 1st period teacher by Friday, November 20.

Students returning forms after this date may not be able to participate, and same day sign-ups are not available. We will notify the OMHS students and parents of the exact vaccination date once the Howard County Health Department notifies us. Only presently enrolled OMHS students are eligible to participate in the vaccination program; siblings and other family members are not eligible.

If you have any questions, please call the OMHS health room 410-313-6952.

Howard County Central Library - Nosy Parents Book Discussion

There is a new Book Club for adults or young adults interested in reading what is popular in JF and YA lit. Discussions are just like a "regular" book club with additional focus on the appropriateness of the title for age group intended/what could be learned from it/other concerns adults might have with regard to what kids are reading.

The club meets on the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Central Meeting Room. Books are available a month before each meeting at the Central Library Fiction desk.

The schedule is as follows:

     December - HOLIDAY BREAK
January 14 - Twilight by Stephenie Meyer
February 11 - Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher

SAT Mock Test

A SAT mock test will be administered on Saturday, November 21, 2009 at 8:00 a.m. at Wilde Lake High School. The fee for the mock test will be $10 (cash). Please return the registration form and pay the testing fee to Mr. Rose in room 238 by Friday, November 13, 2009. Students who are registering outside of Wilde Lake should report by 7:30 a.m. to register the day of the test. There will be no refunds for those students who miss the test. The test is open to the first 100 students who register.

Wilde Lake High School in conjunction with Studyworks (SAT PREP source) has established the SAT mock test in an effort to prepare students for the SAT. Studies show that students do better the second time they take the SAT. It is our goal to let the mock test represent the first time. A representative from Studyworks will give a presentation and provide each student with a written analysis on a date to be determined.

On the day of the test, students who are pre-registered should report to Main Street (Front lobby Wilde Lake High) by 7:45a.m.; students who are not registered should report by 7:30 a.m. All students should bring two #2 pencils, a calculator, and a snack. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Mr. Rose at (410) 313-6965 or by email: erose@hcpss.org.

To register please email the following information to Mr. Rose to reserve your spot:
     Name
     Grade
     Phone Number
     Current Math Class

From the Health Room

Thank you to all parents who have been notifying the school when your child is absent from school with an illness. We are continuing to track student illnesses and reporting weekly numbers to the Health Dept. The most efficient method of notification is by email: omhsabsence@hcpss.org as this address notifies Mrs. Bechara in the Health room, Ms. Kai the Cluster Nurse and Mrs. Herr the Attendance secretary; or call 410-313-6952 or 410-313-6945.

Please include your child's symptoms. We are specifically tracking Influenza symptoms: fever higher than 100.0, cough and sore throats; but appreciate symptoms if your child has another illness.

Please also continue to send a signed note with your child when (s)he returns from the absence. Thank you.

If your student is sick, please do not send them to school to take a test/quiz and then sign out to go home. Students are permitted to make up any work for an excused absence.

Also, cell phone use is not permitted during the school day. Please do not permit your student to text you that they are not feeling well. Any ill student should report to the Health Room, and Mrs. Bechara and Ms. Kai will be happy to help your student contact you at that time.

Thank you for your cooperation!

Maryland Pathways

The University of Maryland has maintained a long tradition of providing high quality undergraduate education to academically talented students from the State of Maryland . However, access, affordability, and choice have become critical issues as recent economic conditions have made it harder for families of modest means to afford the rising costs of education. Increasingly, families with limited resources have had to assume debt to defray these costs.

To assist low-income families in these circumstances, the University of Maryland has created a financial assistance program: Maryland Pathways. This three-tiered program reduces the debt component and increases the grant component of the student's financial aid package.

In-school H1N1 Flu Vaccine Administration Began Friday, October 23

The Howard County Health Department will be administering H1N1 vaccinations to school-aged children in schools. Children will not receive the vaccine without a signed parental consent form. A message explaining the vaccination schedule was sent to parents earlier this week via HCPSS News. Additional information is also available on the school system's website at http://www.hcpss.org/, or by calling the Howard County Health Department at 410-313-6503.
