HCPSS Receives Waiver of One Day; June 8 is Last Day

The State Board of Education has approved Superintendent Sydney Cousin's request for a waiver of the 180-day school year requirement for students. As a result, the last day of school for HCPSS students will be Friday, June 8, 2012.

Schools were closed on the first scheduled day of the 2011-212 school year due to hurricane conditions in the area. The makeup day was scheduled for Monday, June 11. With the waiver of that day, the last day of school will be June 8, as originally scheduled.

In addition, the Superintendent has recommended, and the Board of Education has given tentative approval, to a waiver of that same day for teachers and other 10-month school-based staff. The Board will confirm the decision with a formal vote at today’s Board meeting.

OMHS Participates in State-wide Weather Emergency Drill

Due to the record number of tornadoes last year, the National Weather Service in conjunction with the Maryland Emergency Management Agency organized a statewide weather emergency drill for today. At approximately 9:45am Oakland Mills High School participated in this state-wide drill. Staff and students were guided by administration on the procedures and protocol when and if there is a weather related emergency. The students and staff practiced the emergency action of "Duck, Cover, and Hold".

In the event of an emergency parents/guardians that are in the building are required to follow any and all directions given by authorized school personnel.

Please be advised that in the event of an actual emergency normal early release procedures of students will differ and student release procedures must be followed in accordance with the Howard County Core Site Emergency Operations Plan.

As always we thank you for your continued support by making Oakland Mills High School a safe school environment.

Vinnie's Wish - Butterflies for Cancer

Two years ago, we lost our youngest son to cancer, osteosarcoma. Even before his diagnosis Vincent was a very caring and giving child, from breaking his crayons and sharing with other classmates to giving away his lunch money and coat to others who needed it most. Or just as simple as sharing a starburst and a silly joke to make you feel special - always a friend forever. Vincent had a special gift for helping others even through his courageous battle with cancer - orchestrating fundraisers for others from his hospital bed.

Vincent found that being a child with cancer it was amazing that he never heard of any fundraisers to bring awareness to this great war for children. So he went to work and on paper he created a charm for childhood cancers. Unfortunately he became an angel before the idea and charm were created. This June we recieved a copyright on "Vinnies Wish". There are only 100 in existence at this point in time, and are for sale, proceeds to benefit A Message of Hope.org, a non-profit helping families challenged by cancers. Butterflies for Cancer are a beautiful gift that gives more than one time. For more info you may contact me, Karen Hillen, at 443-896-8006 or you may visit Vinnie's Wish on Facebook.

School Bus Schedules Online

School bus routes for the coming school year are available on the HCPSS website, and will be updated twice each week through September 30. Each school will also have copies of their specific routes and street lists for transported and non-transported areas.

Bus schedules will also be published in the Columbia Flier and the Howard County Times. Because the information published in the newspaper is subject to change, you are encouraged to check the most current information on bus assignments, stops and times on www.hcpss.org: click on "School and Bus Locator" and enter your address.

Please note that this is the last year that school bus schedules will be published in local newspapers.

Free and Reduced Price Meal Application Now Online

Applications for free and reduced price school meals may now be completed online. The HCPSS is the first Maryland school system to offer the online application.

The school system will continue to distribute paper applications on the first day of school for parents who do not have access to a computer.

Eligibility information and a link to the online application can be found at www.hcpss.org/foodservice/free.shtml.
