Saving & Printing
Part of the Oakland Mills HS vision is to prepare students to adapt, contribute, and compete in an increasingly technological society. Throughout these four years, students use computers and the internet to gather, evaluate, and produce information.
One issue students find they need to master is transferring computer files between school and home. Below are some helpful tips.
Access
The OMHS Media Center has several Windows computers available for student use throughout the day. The Media Center generally opens at 6:45am and closes at 3:30pm. During classes and lunch, students need a pass from a teacher to use the Media Center. At the beginning of the year, each student must bring in a signed Computer and Internet Use Permission Form before using any school computer.
After school hours, Howard County libraries have many Windows computers with internet access available for public use.
Research Information Sources
HCPSS subscribes to a number of quality research databases that give students access to hundreds of thousands of encyclopedia entries, reference articles, newspaper and magazine articles, primary sources, images and more.
Students can log in to these databases from anywhere. A list of our databases and login information is available here. Students also can search the OMHS Media Center book catalog.
File Formats
OMHS computers have Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) installed. Many families use alternatives such as WordPerfect Office or Open Office. Files created by these applications will not open on school computers unless the following steps are followed:
| |
- Pull down the File menu and select Save As.
- Beneath File Name, pull down the Save As File Type menu.
- Choose Rich Text Format (RTF).
|
|
|
Rich Text Format (RTF) is a text-only format that allows bold, italics, underlining, and different fonts to be used. A file saved in Rich Text Format will open on practically all other computers.
Saving
The OMHS network has individual folders for each student to save work. Unfortunately, these folders aren’t accessible from home. Students who use 3.5” floppy disks often find that these disks fail, and they lose their work. We suggest that students use one of these alternatives:
| |
- Sign up for a free email account, and send files as attachments to email. Choose an email service with strong spam protection, such as Google’s Gmail.
- Buy your student a USB flash drive with at least 256MB storage. The best prices are online. Warning: USB flash drives are easy to lose.

Printing
Students are welcome to print homework and projects on the Media Center printer – individual copies only, not multiple copies or class sets. Students should arrive early enough to print without being late to class, allowing time to troubleshoot any problems.
