SAT Information

For information about registering for the SAT, check out CollegeBoard.com.

Juniors’ PSAT scores will be used for eligibility for both Maryland Distinguished Scholars and the National Merit and National Achievement Scholarship Programs. This summer would be a good time for rising juniors to read everything they can get their hands on and to take a PSAT/SAT preparation course to insure a successful score next October. Prep opportunities are available by using online practice (for free), obtaining private tutoring, and attending classes at Howard Community College or other classes offered by private companies.

Class rank and Grade Point Average (GPA) are figured each year following grades 9, 10, and 11 using the final end-of-the-year averages. Starting with the Class of 2000, Howard County posts class rank and both unweighted GPA and weighted GPA on every senior high school transcript. Weighted GPA is determined by adding quality points earned in core curriculum classes (English, Social Studies, Science, Math, and Foreign Language) in the following way:

  • For A’s and B’s earned in honors courses add 0.5
  • For A’s and B’s earned in GT and AP courses add 1.0.

Weighted rank and GPA are used only in the college application or scholarship process, not for the Honor Roll or the National Honor Society, and are available at the end of 11th grade ONLY. Eligibility for Extracurricular Activities, including

All students wanting to participate in any extra-curricular activities will have to adhere to the eligibility requirements. You must receive a 2.0 grade point average and no “E’s” in order to be eligible to participate in sports or clubs/organizations. See your counselor if you have any questions.

When you receive this year’s final report card in the mail please review carefully the enclosed grade level information sheets. This information will be very helpful to your student to insure a successful new year.

Resource Center

Parent volunteers are available to assist students from 10:15 to 12:20 every day in the GRC for career exploration, computerized college searches, testing and scholarship information, and other career and college reference materials. Students must get a pass to visit the GRC from their 4th period teachers or the administrator on duty during lunch. Check out our resources covering the following topics:

  • Reference books about colleges, scholarships, SAT prep books, ACT prep books, and Advanced Placement (AP) Tests. A parent or students can sign these books out for three weeks.
  • College catalogues, videos and CDs, which are udpated on a continual basis. These are also available for sign-out by a parent or student.
  • College applications
  • Career center with information about many different types of careers and what to expect of each career in terms of education, salary, etc.
  • Scholarship information that comes in on a regular basis. Copies of scholarship applications are available to everyone.
  • Program descriptions on Culinary Arts, Nursing Programs, technical schools, the military and much, much more!

The volunteers also provide valuable information on the PTSA website in the Guidance Folder, where you can find more information on a variety of topics, including college searches, college fairs, testing information, college rep visits to OM and the Freshmen Newsletter.
