Academic Programs
Alpha Achievers fosters an environment conducive to facilitating the pursuit of excellence for black male students achieving a 3.0 GPA or higher. Sponsor: Vincent James.
Freshman & Sophomore Scholars provides high school and college focus once a month to students with a 3.0 GPA. Sponsor: Vincent James.
High Flyers serves to assist students with the planning and preparation necessary to enroll in competitive colleges and post-high school placements. Eligibility for this program is based upon students taking a minimum of three GT classes in all core subject areas. Sponsor: Amy Ruffing.
National Art Honor Society is for students in grades 10-12 who have received a "B" or higher in Art 1. Members will participate in a variety of activities which may include but are not limited to mural painting, field trips, studio nights, school beautification, and museum/gallery visits. Sponsor: Heather Leatherman.
National Honor Society recognizes students who have exhibited academic excellence (3.4 GPA or better), leadership, good character, and dedication to community service. Once inducted, NHS members are involved in service activities such as tutoring and canned food drives that benefit the school and community. Sponsors: Carol Creed, Barbara Gilmartin.
Spanish National Honor Society recognizes academic excellence in Spanish studies. A final grade average of an "A" in three previous Spanish classes is required. Sponsor: Jamie Bowman.
Student Government Association - Students who have a 2.0 GPA as well as a signed petition by 30 peers and teachers can run for an office by giving a speech. This group is actively involved in changes at OMHS. Sponsor: Vincent James.
Other Programs
African-American Awareness is designed to create a support system for African American students by discussing issues that are relevant to teenagers today, college and test preparation and participating in field trips such as college tours and the Great Blacks in Wax Museum. Sponsor: Annette Olney.
Art Club - Students who are currently in or have taken Art 1 are encouraged to join. Members will participate in a variety of activities at school and in the community. Exemplary art members will be considered for induction into the National Art Honor Society. Sponsor: Heather Leatherman.
Asian Club promotes understanding of the Asian culture and provides a point of identity for these students. Sponsor: Lorna Kent.
Barbershop is a performance-based group that involves concerts and community functions. Sponsor: Cynthia Stephens.
Best Buddies is a friendship program that helps students see past differences, make new friends, and have fun. Co-sponsors: Heather Tordella.
Break Dance Club positively engages students in creative self-expression through movement. Students will have an opportunity to share and learn break dance moves. Sponsor: Carol Collins.
Computer Science Team provides opportunities with academic competitions in computer science and computer programming. Sponsor: Michael Mosier.
Cycling Club promotes cycling as a sport, hobby, and means of transportation in our school and community. Sponsors: Bob Yore, Justin Parke.
Drama Club is an out-of-school drama workshop to develop different skills and abilities in theatre types. Sponsor: Daniel Alburger.
Environmental Club exposes members to a variety of environmental and biological issues facing our world. Field experiences, fundraisers and habitat restoration projects are a few opportunities offered throughout the school year. Sponsors: Cynthia Hamel. Environmental Club Website.
Escorpiones Latinos is for Hispanic/Latino students at OMHS. They meet for academic and social activities as well as community involvement and improvement. This club seeks to promote pride and cultural preservation. Sponsor: Diana Thesing.
The Exchange encourages fellowship among Christians at OMHS. Supervisor: Richard Smart.
French Club provides opportunities to further French conversational proficiency and vocabulary, and to be further immersed in French culture. Sponsor: Amanda Hepler.
Future Educators of America fosters enthusiasm for careers in education. Sponsor: Paula Lancaster.
German Club exposes students to more of the German culture and language in a fun and communicative manner. Sponsor: Julie Gallant.
It's Academic enables students to participate in It's Academic competitions. Sponsor: Justin Parke.
Jazz Band enables students to perform a variety of traditional and popular jazz music. Sponsor: Dan Richmond.
Jewish Awareness Club promotes awareness of Jewish culture in a relaxed atmosphere. Sponsor: Donna Sunderdick.
JROTC Color Guard Team presents the "colors" to assemblies, pep rallies and other local events.Sponsors: LtCol Carl Nowack, MSgt Alvin Bowman.
JROTC Exhibition Drill Team is for any JROTC member to compete in drill competitions such as the County Drill Meet, Baltimore City Drill Meet, and the National Drill Competitions. Sponsors: LtCol Carl Nowack, MSgt Alvin Bowman.
JROTC Kitty Hawk Association is an honors club for JROTC students that maintain a 2.7 GPA. This club does community service activities and day trips to various military sites. Sponsors: LtCol Carl Nowack, MSgt Alvin Bowman.
JROTC Rifle Team is for any JROTC member to compete in the County Drill Meet, Baltimore City Drill Meet, Homecoming Pep Rally, and the Washington DC National Drill Meet. Sponsors: LtCol Carl Nowack, MSgt Alvin Bowman.
Magic Card Club allows students to play in Magic: The Gathering card games. Sponsor: Don Shea.

Math Team works on mathematics problems to prepare for countywide competitions. Once a month, the team competes against all other Howard County schools in individual and team competition. A geometry or better math background is recommended, but all newcomers are welcome. Sponsor: Bob Yore.
MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement) is for students interested in becoming engineers, mathematicians or scientists. Sponsor: Annette Olney.
Muslim Student Association promotes awareness of the Islamic culture. Sponsors: Peter Foy, Regina Wilson.
PLOOM (Peer Leaders of Oakland Mills) invites all ninth graders to attend a workshop that focuses on refusal skills. Small groups facilitated by upperclassmen work on these skills through role playing, open discussion and dialogue. Sponsor: Margaret Hunt.
Rainbow Nation is a group of students who meet to discuss issues regarding tolerance, acceptance, and issues of concern regarding cohesiveness versus conflicts of gay and straight students. Sponsor: Jon Blankman.
Sister to Sister grants opportunities for female students with a 2.5 GPA or higher to build and develop character traits, fellowships, and community outreach, and to further their potential socially and academically. Sponsor: Joslyn Wolfe.
Spanish Club enables students to explore Hispanic culture and converse in target language. Sponsor: Jon Blankman.
Spirit Club encourages spirit throughout OMHS, especially during after school activities, and raises awareness of school unity and school pride. Students who wear their spirit shirts to school sports activities can many times be admitted free of charge. Sponsor: Kim Rosado.
Strategy Games Club offers after school entertainment featuring chess and other strategy games that exercise logic skills while having fun. Sponsor: Cathy Crawford.
Teen Fashion Club promotes creativity through fashion and design. The club plans activities that will culminate in a year-end fashion show. Sponsors: Carol Collins, Zenoba Stephens.
Writer's Bloc is designed to engage creative writers through exercises, practice, and discussion. Meets in The Commons. Sponsor: Kelly Klinefelter-Lee, Donna Sunderdick.
