Howard County Central Library - Nosy Parents Book DiscussionThere is a new Book Club for adults or young adults interested in reading what is popular in JF and YA lit. Discussions are just like a "regular" book club with additional focus on the appropriateness of the title for age group intended/what could be learned from it/other concerns adults might have with regard to what kids are reading. The club meets on the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Central Meeting Room. Books are available a month before each meeting at the Central Library Fiction desk. The schedule is as follows: December - HOLIDAY BREAK Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. & Grace Community Church – Free Coats and ClothingFree winter coats and clothing for children, women and men will be available from 9:00 a.m. – 12 noon on November 21, 2009, at Roslyn Rise Community Center, 10339 Twin Rivers Road in the Village of Wilde Lake. Columbia Association – Howard County's Got TalentThe Columbia Association Teen Advisory & Middle School Advisory Committee and CIMA Talent Agency are sponsoring Howard County’s Got Talent, talent contest on Friday, January 8, 2010 from 7 – 9 p.m. at the Other Barn, 5851 Robert Oliver Place in the Village of Oakland Mills in Columbia. The Grand Prize is a year representation contract with CIMA Talent. The contest is open to all Howard County middle and high school students…singing, dancing, and playing musical instruments. Open auditions will be held on Wednesday, December 16 and Thursday, December 17, at 6:30 p.m. at the Teen Center in Oakland Mills. Call to register to audition by December 10, at 410-715-5523. Columbia Asoociation – "Images of Freedom" Poster ContestThe Columbia Association is now hosting its seventh annual "Images of Freedom" Poster Contest for Howard County middle and high school students. Creatively interpret what the theme "Images of Freedom" means to you and you could win the chance to see your artwork displayed on the sides of Howard County Transit vehicles throughout the month of February - in honor of Black History Month. All artwork will be featured in an art gallery show at the Columbia Art Center. Entries must be dropped off or sent to CA Headquarters no later than Wednesday, January 6, 2010. Winning images will be selected on January 11. CA Headquarters is located at 10221 Wincopin Circle, Columbia, Maryland 21044. Columbia Association Teen Advisory Committee and Operation Military Kids – Help Military Families at Holiday TimeParticipate in an opportunity to reach out to military families who have members who have been deployed and who find the holidays particularly difficult. The event will take place on Saturday, December 12, 2009 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the Teen Center in Oakland Mills, 5853 Robert Oliver Place. Lunch will be provided. Fill baskets and make Hero packs for the kids (all materials supplied) and deliver the baskets to area families (van transportation provided). Glen Mar United Methodist ChurchGlen Mar United Methodist Church will present a free indoor/outdoor theatrical experience, Walk to Bethlehem, running continuously from 4 – 8 p.m., on Saturday, and Sunday, December 5 and 6. The Christmas adventure is for the whole family. Meet Roman soldiers, shepherds and angels and see live animals as you walk through the Christmas story, including a trip to an authentic marketplace. Tickets may be purchased at the door and are $6/person. Doors open at 9:30 a.m. and the movie will start promptly at 10:00 a.m. with no trailers. Join us at Slayton House for our 25th Annual Breakfast and More with Santa on Saturday, December 5, 2009 in the Wilde Lake Village Center in Columbia. Tickets go on sale November 1, 2009. We will host the customary breakfast seating at 8:30 a.m. and at 11:30 a.m., we will offer a special lunch seating. Cartoons will be shown during both seatings, and each child will get a private visit, and a photograph taken with Santa. Our famous “Secret Shop” will also be open for children only. Santa’s elves will help any child who wants to buy inexpensive gifts for the family. Gift wrapping is free. Tickets go fast for this event and there are a limited number of seats. Stressless Tests - Fall Study SkillsStressless Tests® High School and Middle School Fall Study Skills Classes are open for registration just in time to support students for the new semester. High school classes meet for four Wednesday evenings from 6:30 - 8:30 pm. at Centennial HS. The last session begins on November 18. Howard County Public School System Fine Arts Advisory CouncilThe HCPSS Fine Arts Advisory Council is sponsoring an evening for all students, especially those currently in 8th - 11th grade, who are interested in pursuing higher education in Theater, Dance, or the Visual Arts. The event will include panels for each genre of study to discuss the admissions process and scholarship information for those students pursuing fine arts degrees. Students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The event will take place on Monday, December 14, 2009 from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at Atholton High School, 6520 Freetown Road in Columbia. Soroptimist International of Howard CountySoroptimist International of Howard County is seeking applicants for the Violet Richardson Award, which is awarded to a 14 - 17 year old girl who has performed extraordinary service to the community. Applicants are asked to fill out a one-page information sheet and prepare a 750 word essay telling where they volunteer and why. The award is $300 for the winner and $200 for her charity of choice. Applications are due on December 1, 2009, and the winner is selected in January. Winners are honored at the annual awards banquet in April. Soroptimist is an international volunteer organization for business and professional women who work to improve the lives of women and girls in our community and around the world. The amazing weekend camp will be held at Sandy Hill Camp located in beautiful northeast Maryland on the Chesapeake Bay. The goal of the camp is to provide children with diabetes the opportunity to maximize their ability to perform at their highest level in all areas of sports, fitness and life activities while maintaining intensive glucose control.
