November 20, 2009

There will be a Delta Scholars meeting Friday, November 20th at 12:25pm in the back of the auditorium.

The Anime Club will be meeting in Room 807 after school on Friday.

The second annual Chili Cook Off is this Friday, November 20th. Tickets are $5 in advance and $7 at the door. If you want to enter chili please contact Mariano-Brooks. Remember if your chili wins you can win up to $100 in prizes!

Immediately following the Chili Cookoff, Sister to Sister will sponsor the Lost Boys of Sudan in the auditorium. Admission is free. Come out and support a great cause.

There will a book swap at the Other Barn on Saturday, November 21st from 10am - 1pm. Bring your used books in good condition and swap free of charge with others. Books must be appropriate, no lewd or adult content. Sponsored by the Teen Advisors to the Oakland Mills Board.

All Girls JV Soccer players need to see Coach Bleivik for banquet information. All Girls Varsity Soccer players need to see Coach Rosner for banquet information.

Attention seniors! The senior spirit wear sale has been extended until November 24! Drop off your order forms at all four lunches during the week of November 16 - 20, or after school to Mrs. Cutler in room 301 or Mr. McDonald in room 409.

Our Honor Roll celebration will take place on Tuesday, November 24. Honor roll students must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher with only 1 C and no D's or E's. Invitations will be given out during period 3 on Thursday.

Students, please return your H1N1 consent forms to your 1st period teachers now and before Friday if your parents would like you to have the vaccination. If you were absent or didn't receive your consent form last week, please ask your 6th period teacher or come to the health room. 1st period teachers: please return the consent forms to the Health Room or our mailbox.

Congratulations to the Cross Country teams who participated in the State Tournament this weekend. The Girls Team finished 4th.  Sarah Brand (5th) and Tiffany Lang (12th) both earned medals. The Boys Team finished 9th at the meet.  Jay Kuvelker (15th) and Sam Andrews (25th) both earned medals.

During this year's annual Poetry Alive Chinese Poetry Recitation competition on Tuesday night, Keyanna Mills beat other students from Centennial, Long Reach, and Wilde Lake High Schools and won the first place for the Chinese Level 2 category. Congratulations to Keyanna for a job well done!

The biggest game of the year, the PowderPuff Football Game is today from 3 - 5pm. Come out and support your classmates! It's only $3, and it is going to be so much fun!

Free Pizza to Spirit Club members today in the Cafeteria after school. Come see Mrs. Rosado in Room 608 to get your FREE ticket to the Pizza Party. If you are not a member you can still join. You will be able to get into all home basketball games and wrestling matches for only $1, plus you get a free ticket to the Pizza Party.

JV GIRLS BASKETBALL: There will be a paperwork meeting today after school in the girls locker room with Coach Bleivik at 2:20pm. Please bring all necessary paperwork to play basketball. Tryouts will be held on Saturday at 7:45am in the Auxillary Gym. Also, Varsity Girls Basketball: The first day of practice will be held on Saturday, November 14th from 12pm - 2pm in the main gym. Be ready to practice at 12pm. All paperwork is due to Coach Willingham by 2pm today.

The last day to request a transcript and letter of recommendation from your counselor for a December 1st deadline is today. Be sure to bring in the counselor forms/school secondary reports, stamped envelope along with your transcript request.

All girls who played on a Fall Sports team please return your lock to Mrs. Rosado ASAP. The lockers must be cleaned out for the winter sports by today. All lockers will be emptied on November 13th.

Long Reach High School is hosting a Safe Driving Presentation tonight at 7:00pm in the cafeteria. Juniors and seniors who would like to park on school grounds should attend this class and be accompanied by a parent. Please be prompt.

Veterans Day

On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of the year 1918 in a train car outside of Paris, an armistice was signed that ended the "Great War," more commonly known as World War I. Each year this solemn event is commemorated throughout the western world. We in the United States commemorate this occasion through the observance of Veterans Day. Veterans Day allows all Americans the opportunity to remember and show our appreciation to all of those men and women who have served in our nation’s armed forces, particularly those who gave their lives in order to secure the blessings of liberty. We at Oakland Mills would like to take this opportunity to remember those who have sacrificed so much for our country. We ask you to also think of those brave men and women who currently serve in our nation's armed forces during these dangerous times, especially those serving in harms way in troubled regions throughout the world.

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has preserved our freedom of the press
It is the soldier, not the poet, who has preserved our freedom of speech
It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has preserved our freedom to demonstrate
It is the soldier, who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag, and whose coffin is draped in the flag, who allows the protester to burn the flag.

So, remember, each time you see someone who has served our country, just lean over and say "thank you." That’s all most people need, and in most cases it will mean more than medals they could have been or were awarded. Two little words that mean a lot; "THANK YOU."

Attention all students, Tuesday, November 10th is National Mix It Up Day which will take place during all lunch shifts. This is a great chance to meet new peers.

Anyone wishing to play boys basketball this winter, there is a mandatory boys basketball meeting Tuesday, November 10th at 2:15pm in Coach Browne's room (507). If you cannot attend you must tell Coach Browne in person.

Today MESA will be meeting at 2:15pm in Room 807. We are still accepting registration forms.

Today after school will be the monthly meeting of the Asian Club. We will be celebrating Korean culture in Room 105 after school.

The OM Varsity Cheerleaders will be competing at Glenelg High School today (11/5). Doors open at 5pm, and admission is $5. Come support the varsity squad!!

Pictures for student aide passes will be taken this week during 4th period. If you currently aide for a teacher stop by the Media Center and see Mr. Yarn at the beginning of A, B, C, or D lunch to take your picture. This is the only time pictures for student aide passes will be taken, so don't miss this deadline.

The Environmental Club will be planting the trees for Mrs. Sunderdick's Pathway after school today. Please join us to make this project a success!! Meet at the far end of the student parking lot near the football field no later than 2:30pm. We should be about an hour if everyone helps out. Hope to see you all there!!

The National Honor Society will have their monthly meeting tonight at 7:30pm in the Media Center.

The Spanish Club, El Club Espanol, is pleased to announce that it has created a wonderful altar for the Day of the Dead - el Dia de los Muertos. We will celebrate this holiday with una fiesta today in Room 306 after school. Bring a treat, enjoy a treat!

All wrestlers report to Coach Howell's room (507) today for a body fat assessment immediately after school.

Pictures for student aide passes will be taken this week during 4th period. If you currently aide for a teacher stop by the Media Center and see Mr. Yarn at the beginning of A, B, C, or D lunch to take your picture. This is the only time pictures for student aide passes will be taken, so don't miss this deadline.

Please come out and support the Girls Basketball program Wednesday night, November 4th from 5 - 9pm at the Dobbin Center Chick-Fil-A. All you have to do is present a flier and the basketball program will receive 20% of the sales for that night. Please see Coach Willingham for a flier and come support the girls.

The Boys Lacrosse Team will be having a meeting on Wednesday 11/11 at 2:20pm in Room 204. Anyone interested in playing lacrosse in the spring should attend. If you cannot attend, but wish to play you need to see Coach Hipszer in Room 204.

The Spanish Club, El Club Espanol, is pleased to announce that it has created a wonderful altar for the Day of the Dead - el Dia de los Muertos. We will celebrate this holiday with una fiesta this Wednesday, November 4, in Room 306 after school. Bring a treat, enjoy a treat!

Come out to the annual OM Craft Fair this Saturday in the Oakland Mills Gym. Over 80 vendors will be on hand to help you start the holiday shopping season. The event will run from 10am to 3pm.

All Boys Soccer Players - REMINDER - Meet on SATURDAY at 8am in the GYM for the Leaf Raking Fundraiser. BRING: A rake and lunch. It is imperative that you tell Mr. Cutler ASAP if you cannot attend.
