Upon the recommendation of the IEP team, specialized instruction may be provided for any student determined to be eligible for special education services.  Individual, small group and/or team-taught instruction are provided in reading, mathematics, written language, content areas and/or self-management skills as appropriate.  The services are individually determined based on the IEP Team’s review of the areas and degree of educational deficits, review of all assessment reports, and information obtained from classroom teachers.
Students who qualify for special education service (s) receive an Individualized Educational Program (IEP) that includes goals and objectives, supplementary aids and services, modifications for assessment and hours of service.  Goals and objectives upon which instruction is based are found in the Individual Education Program (IEP) prepared for each student.
.
The special education teachers are also responsible for:

  • Developing and implementing the IEP with the general education teachers
  • Conducting IEP meetings with parents/guardians and general education teachers
  • Formal and informal educational testing and completion of assessment
  • Scheduling IEP team meetings and notifying parent/guardian and classroom teacher(s)
  • Acting as liaison with the Special Education Office and outside agencies
  • Acting as a resource to parents and classroom teachers

Additional services such as Speech/Language, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Adaptive Physical Education, and Vision/Hearing are provided based on assessments and recommendations by the IEP team to meet a student’s educational needs.
