The Gifted and Talented program supports the mission of the Howard County School System; to ensure excellence in teaching and learning and to produce students who will demonstrate responsibility in a diverse and changing world.
The working definition of giftedness is adapted from one by Joseph Renzulli. Gifted behavior is demonstrated in above average ability, high levels of task commitment, and high levels of creativity. Our students are recommended on the basis of outstanding intellectual abilities, specific academic aptitudes, or a creative strength in visual or performing arts.
The G/T math program begins in grade four and services students through grade 5. It is both accelerated and enriched. Students are taught with materials and objectives two years above grade level. Students are tested for inclusion after being nominated by teachers or parents. Testing is done in February for the next year; third graders for GT math and fifth graders for GT classes in middle school the following year. Other indicators of outstanding performance are also considered, along with the test.
The school wide program provides:
* General exploratory activities such as field trips, guest speakers, etc. are offered to all students as a means of exposing students to many areas of interest.
* Instructional seminars provide instruction to small groups of children who have shown an interest and are ready for in-depth study and creation of a product in that field of interest. The duration depends upon the topic.
* Curriculum extension units are designed for selected students in grades 2-5. There are three units taught per grade, per year. Two of the three are mandated by Howard County. The third is at the discretion of the GT teacher and teachers within that grade level. Students receive instruction for 2 hours a week in advanced level research, communication, and technology skills. Selection is through collaboration with all teachers involved and may include test scores and particular study habits and aptitudes noticed in the regular classroom.
The culmination of our year's work will be demonstrated in the Evening of Excellence in May of each year. Please watch the bulletin for announcements concerning the date and plan to join us in the celebration our program.
