Online Resources

Which online resources are available to students?

Online resources come in a variety of formats ranging from the free web sources you find in a Google search to the subscription databases. At MRHS, sources used for research assignments MUST come from the online databases. Teachers can give students permission to use free web sources but those situations are worked out between the instructor and the student. See the explanations below to held differentiate between the different online resources.

Research Databases : The Howard County Public School System subscribes to a variety of research databases for student use. You will choose the appropriate database or databases depending the type of research assignment. In all cases, the databases provide access to thousands of reliable and reviewed resources such as: images, journal articles, magazine articles, newspaper articles, books, reference articles, and webpages. The databases DO NOT require a password to use from within the school building but you will need the passwords provided to you on the yellow card stock sheets given out in your English classes.

Pathfinders: Pathfinders are a list of print and online resources that are available on some of the most popular research topics. Check out the list to see if your topic might be addressed in one of these pathfinders.

eTools: The Howard County Public School System subscribes to several eTools that will assist you with the creation of the final product of your research assignment. These tools include bibliography generation and plagiarism prevention.
