Tech Magnet Program
The
Technology Magnet Program is a high school program which
brings together the strengths of academic education with
the applications of career and technology education. It offers
all students who are interested in technology an opportunity
to apply classroom learning to challenging experiences in
a chosen career. With representatives from business, industry,
government agencies, and research organizations as an integral
component, the Technology Magnet Program will forge a new
and even stronger relationship between the Howard County
Public School System and the community it serves.
This program offers students an opportunity
to prepare for careers rather than jobs. Students have an
opportunity to:
- meet and work with professionals
from career fields,
- conduct individual and group research
projects,
- participate in mentor ship and internships
in business settings,
- work in specialized lab settings,
- explore career options,
- build a foundation for employment
and further education.
The five clusters which make up the Tech
Magnet Program are divided into two strands--the Career and Tech
Prep Strand or the University strand. The five clusters include:
- Biotechnology
- Communications
- Construction and Manufacturing
- Energy, Power, and Transportation
- Human Services
Students enrolled in the Tech Magnet Program
work and learn on three campuses including the high school, the
newly completed Applications and Research Lab near the Board
of Education, and the community.
Students in this program are required
to maintain a portfolio of exemplary work. In the senior
year, each student completes a research project and makes
a presentation to an appropriate authentic audience.
