CLASS OF 2008!!!!

Graduation Requirements: Credit checks and a copy of your unofficial transcript were given to each student during the senior meeting held in September. Please review your summary of credits and the remaining requirements you must meet to graduate. Be sure your senior schedule of courses includes all of these requirements.  Please be sure that you have taken all necessary HSAs… these tests are required by the state of Maryland for those earning a high school diploma.

Senior Conferences: Between September and November, counselors will meet with seniors individually to discuss the progress of their future plans. Parents are welcome to attend the conferences with their student(s).

Transcripts: Please turn in your transcript requests to the Registrar's office in a timely manner… transcripts require 10 working days to complete. The fee for a transcript is $4.00 each. You must submit a completed Counselor Recommendation Packet at the time you turn in your request along with a resume and any counselor or secondary school reports required by your college.

Senior Dues:  Senior Dues are $65 until Nov. 6th and $70 until Dec. 4th.  Please pay early… the dues will continue to increase during the school year.  The Senior Dues include:  The 2008 Senior Class T-shirt, The Senior Class Night Activity and The Senior Class Picnic.  Only those students who have paid their dues will be permitted to attend these events and receive a senior t-shirt.  Please see your class sponsors, Ms. Pamela Wiltsie or Ms. Jennifer Strong (rm. 228) for more information.

Scholarship Information:  Please be aware that the Counseling Office publishes a monthly “Scholarship Alert Bulletin” which advises students of the scholarship opportunities that have been mailed to us from community businesses, organizations, sororities/fraternities, etc…  Please stop by the Counseling Office to pick up your copy and please be mindful of deadlines.  In addition, many scholarship opportunities may be found on-line through resources such as Fastweb.com, Scholarships.com, CollegeBoard.org, Mentor.org and many others.  You may also visit your local library (or our Counseling Office resource cart) to view books which cover the financial aspect of going to college such as College Gold (Fastweb) or College Cost & Financial Aid Handbook (College Board).

College Representative Visits:  We still have quite a few college representatives visiting our school from various colleges (including HCC, John Hopkins, Towson, High Point, Coastal Carolina University, UMBC, Capitol and VA Tech).  Please sign up to meet with them in the Counseling Office.

Counseling Office Phone System

It is important to clarify how the Counseling Office phone system works since many have indicated that they always get the voicemail system. There is ONLY ONE LINE for the 410.313.7412 number to the Counseling Office. If anyone is using that line, it would normally have continued to sound a busy signal, and we might have missed your call. We have a voicemail system for the 5 counselors, the secretary, and the registrars so that you can leave a message. We make every effort to return messages within a 24-hour period. If you have an emergency, you can call the main office at 410.313.7117 to leave a message. We also encourage the use of e-mail for direct contact. Each of us can be reached by using our first initial and full last name @hcpss.org ( e.g., dpelesh@hcpss.org).

ATTENTION

Howard County Grading Policy

-If a student transfers between levels of the same course, the grade the student earned will be transferred and averaged. A "W" code will not be assigned.

- If a student withdraws from a course and transfers to a different course more than one week after the published first quarter interim report, no credit will be available unless a half-credit option is available.

Exams must be taken and "Z" codes must be converted to the appropriate letter grade no later than four weeks following the administration of the exam, unless approved by the principal.
