The course will focus on the goal areas of Maryland's health education curriculum framework: alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs; nutritional fitness, mental health; disease prevention and control; safety; first aid; and injury prevention; family life and human sexuality; and personal and consumer health.
In accordance with Maryland's education bylaws, parents have the option of having their students excused from the units on family life and human sexuality and AIDS prevention. Optional health education curriculum is available for students excused from instruction.

This course is designed to develop skills necessary for living healthy lifestyles among adolescents preparing to enter college and the world of work. Course topics will include maintaining meaningful relationships, communicating with others, conflict resolution, dealing with change, personal safety, substance abuse prevention, human sexuality, goal setting, sexually transmitted diseases, stress, and personal health plans.
Parental permission is required for a family life and human sexuality topics.
