All students begin with French I unless they have completed two years of the language in middle school with a grade of C or better, in which case they will begin with French II.
This course is an introduction to the French Language and culture. Level I French addresses the four traditional skills of language acquisition with emphasis on listening and speaking. Students study many aspects of French life and culture. A variety of instructional methods are used, and students receive help with problems as they arise. Learning a language involves the development of skills; therefore, students are given opportunities to practice each of the four traditional language acquisition skills. They learn to express themselves in a variety of situations with a well-rounded, practical vocabulary. This course also introduces students to the French and U.S. similarities and differences of cultures, as well as francophone cultures around the world.

In French IV the communication skills continue to be refined. A major goal for the student is achieve proficiency in pronunciation, intonation, and facility in the use of grammatical structures. The writing skill is further refined along with extensive vocabulary study. Special attention is given to grammar review, with concentration on structure exceptions and auditory comprehension units. Reading of short stories, poetry, novels and drama is also undertaken.

Special Topics in French are designed for the continuing study of French through a content-based approach to foreign language study. Content-based instruction in French integrates the performance objectives and content topics with other curricular areas, using French as the vehicle for instruction. Topics include: The Image of Women in the Arts, Isolation in the World, The History of Canada and other Francophone Regions, Carmen: the Opera and the Novel, and Current Political Thought in Francophone Countries. While advanced reading, listening, speaking and writing skills are developed in Special Topics, this elective course supplements but does not replace levels IV and V AP. The Special Topics Course may be pursued after the completion of level III but it is recommended that students complete level IV first. Such courses are specifically designed for the four by four model of alternative scheduling, but are also appropriate for other schedule models.
