This course is an introduction to English as a Second Language appropriate for students who have little or no proficiency in English. Listening and speaking skills are emphasized and reading and writing skills are taught as reinforcement for the aural/oral practice. Vocabulary development and practice in using English for basic interpersonal communication are emphasized.
ESOL English II

This course is an intermediate level course for speakers of English as a second language. Students enrolled in this course have developed some proficiency in English but are not yet prepared to study full time in English mainstream classes. Students continue to practice listening and speaking skills and to develop vocabulary. Reading and writing competence is emphasized and higher level thinking skills are practiced throughout the course. Ample conversation practice is provided so that students develop the confidence to communicate in English outside the ESOL classroom.

This effective credit course for ESOL students provides additional instruction in and writing in English. The course is a bridge between ESOL English I and ESOL English II, or is an additional opportunity for ESOL II students with limited literacy skills to strengthen their skills. Application of a variety of reading strategies and reading and writing for a variety of purposes will be emphasized.
ESOL Modern World History

This course is offered for ESOL students who are enrolled in ESOL English II. This course follows the world history curriculum. The course is designed to survey the history of the human experience from the late middle ages to the present. Significant events, concepts, and understandings from both the Western and non-western traditions are explored. This course fulfills the World History graduation requirements. Emphasis is placed upon the mastery of basic skill areas, including study habits, reading for comprehension and interpretation, and written and oral expression.

This elective credit course introduces beginning ESOL students to US history. The course emphasizes significant events in US History, basic geography skills, and academic skills related to social studies. The course also includes information on significant holidays and celebrations and cultural norms as related to American teenagers. Students are encouraged to compare and contrast their cultures as a way of practicing meaningful communication.

This course presents a comprehensive study of United States history from 1877 to the present. Emphasis is placed on the mastery of basic skills. These include study habits, reading for comprehension and interpretation, written and oral expression, as well as social studies skills. This course is recommended for students who have demonstrated a need for skill improvement and language development.

This elective credit course offers beginning ESOL students additional practice in all four skill areas of language learning. Students enrolled at the beginning ESOL level receive assistance in preparing for Maryland Functional tests. Brief oral presentations and practical problem solving situations allow students to improve their communicative competence and build their speaking confidence.
ESOL Tutorial II

This elective credit course for students enrolled in ESOL English II provides additional language practice. Conversational activities and group projects help students develop greater confidence in listening and speaking. A variety of topics and instructional methods prepares students to successfully participate in general education classes once they leave the ESOL program. Preparation for the Maryland Functional tests is offered for any students who have not yet met these test requirements.
