Dear Friends and Families of Lime Kiln Middle School,
We are so proud of our Envirothon teams! Thirteen teams from Howard County competed on Wednesday applying skills and knowledge in the areas of Forestry, Aquatics, Soils and Wildlife. LKMS sent two teamsÑthe Blue Hippotamuses and Road Kill. Road Kill won the entire competition with 337.5 total points. Kudos to Alex Wollack, Kayla Carter, Maggie DeBlasis, James Tuo and David Hessler. The Blue Hippos took second with 336 points. Congrats to Maureen Monk, Karen Liu, Nicole Moy, Jake Taylor and Allen Warthen. This year was the third year in a row that Lime Kiln has placed first in the competition! Thanks to Mrs. Spillman, Mr. Shifflett, Mrs. Landerman, Mrs. Jordan, Ms. Derreth, Mr. Baranson and Mr. White for the excellent job they did in preparing our students.
This week, as we continue through the 25 Rules of Civility from the book, Choosing Civility by P. M. Forni, we focus on Rule 9: Respect even a subtle ÒnoÓ. Below are some highlights from that chapter.
This week was highlighted by a visit from a Chinese delegation of educators from Bao Ji.
The Fulton campus signed a partnership with the delegation. We are certainly hopeful that we can reciprocate with a delegation of teachers and administrators to visit their schools.
Sincerely,
Brenda Thomas
Our students of the week are: Ndiritu Kiragu , Caroline Desjardins-Park, Nikhil Gulati
Desiree Williams, Max Mattejat, Jason Song, Christina Alms, and Dylan Robson.
THE RULES OF CIVILITY
Someone has turned down your request or invitation & you wonÕt take no for an answer. Bad idea & bad form. Respecting the ÒnoÓ of another is one of the most significant rules of respect. Instead of interrogating, you might say, ÒI just want you to know that weÕd be glad to have you. If not this, maybe another time.Ó
Learn to recognize a ÒnoÓ when itÕs not stated in the most explicit of ways. If the stranger sitting beside you on the plane is paying more attention to the computer screen than to your attempts at starting a conversation, thatÕs a Òno.Ó If your in-laws appear less than enthusiastic at the news youÕre planning to leave your children with them for the weekend, donÕt ignore their clues.
Training in good manners is training in sensitivity. Thus, good manners are a precious resource in the fight against a number of ills afflicting us today.
PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCESÉLime Kiln Middle School will once again be using the Pick A Time program for scheduling conferences on November 19, 20 and 21. A letter will be coming home with the students today explaining how to access the program. In order to schedule conferences you will need your studentsÕ ID number which is located on the top of the conference letter.
HARVEST FOR THE HUNGRYÉ.The kick off for the Harvest for the Hungry Food Drive was Monday, Oct. 22. There is a homeroom contest to see which homeroom will bring in the most food by the pound. Mr. Belden will weigh the food in the gym each morning. The 7th and 8th grade town council representatives will work with Cedar Lane students to separate and pack the food. We will also have a grade level competition among the students where the leading student contributor in each grade level will receive an ITune card. The Related Arts Team will sponsor Quarter Day at the beginning of second quarter. Each student in the school is ask to bring $.25 to their Related Arts class for collection. At Thanksgiving 6 families in our school community who need assistance will receive Thanksgiving dinner baskets along with other non-perishable foods. The quarters are use to purchase perishable items for the Thanksgiving dinners. If money is left over we will purchase grocery store gift cards for the families. Please support this very worthwhile charity by sending in canned and packaged items. Thank you for your continuous generosity. Cindy Dupski

Social Studies:
Mr. White: We're finishing Ancient Greece and Rome. The classes are preparing an Awards Show speech for three contributions from Ancient Rome for next week. The county test is on October 25th.
Mr. Kelly: In S.S. news, Mr. Kelly's students are finishing up their study of Ancient European civilizations and their impact on the modern day world. Students have been working on projects that honor these civilizations and their contributions and achievements. The projects have looked great so far. In other news, Quarterly assessments are just around the corner, so students should be sure to take advantage of the study resources at their disposal. Those resources include a Crossword Puzzle Review Sheet, a Vocabulary list, their warm-ups, other assignments and a review podcast that is posted on my TeacherWeb page. Good luck in closing the quarter out strong.
Math:
Ms. Lee: Algebra students should make sure that they have their graphing calculators for at home use by the end of 1st quarter, November 1. As we finish up our first quarter, please be prepared for the quarterly assessment on October 30 and October 31.
Middle School Math II students are just finishing up their unit on integers. Ask your student to explain to you who Fred is and his significance in math class! Please be prepared for your quarterly assessment on October 30 and October 31.

ATTENTION: ALL 6TH GRADE PARENTS:
The PTA is sponsoring a Sixth Grade Team Building Icebreaker Event to be held at Lime Kiln on Thursday, November 1st from 3:10 until 5:00 p.m. This event entails numerous team building activities for the students similar to those that are held at Outdoor Ed. As you know, Outdoor Ed is scheduled for the end of May. Various parents felt our sixth graders could use activities that would help bring them together as a team much earlier than waiting until May. In order for this event to be successful, we are in need of 15-20 parents who are willing to help run these various activities. If you are available and willing to help with this event the afternoon of November 1st, please e-mail Sherri Tatum at statum1@verizon.net or Jeanne Lineberry at jeanne_lineberry@verizon.net by no later than October 26, 2007. A brief training session will be scheduled prior to November 1st. Thank you.
PTA is running a Coat Drive! Please donate your gently used coats, hats, gloves to the PTA. Pupil Personnel Workers from the school system will distribute the coats to students in need in Howard County. As you buy new winter coats, please consider passing on the old, outgrown coats to this worthy cause. Please bring coats to the box in the front hall by Friday, Nov. 2. Questions, please contact Sherri Tatum (statum1@verizon.net) or Ellen Makar (eemakar@aol.com)
Join the LKMS Hospitality Committee! The next big event for our committee is the Teacher and Staff Conference Dinner on November 19, 2007. We plan to serve dinner to the teachers and staff who are still at school for parent/teacher conferences. This allows the teachers and staff to take a nice dinner break and still accommodate as many parents as possible on the first night of conferences. If you have not already been contacted to help, and would like to help by setting up, cleaning up or providing some food, please email Moira Monk at mdmonks@comcast.net or call her at (410) 531-6752. Thank you.
November 30, Lime Kiln will host another family pottery night at The Studio in Fulton. The Studio will donate 15% of the proceeds to LKMS so stop by with your friends and family on Friday, November 30 from 4:00- 8:30 to paint your own pottery. What a great way to get a jump on your holiday shopping, help LKMS and have fun with your friends. Visit the Studio anytime to preview your pottery options. For an online visit go to www.fultonpottery.com
Used Ink Cartridges - The Music Department is collecting used ink cartridges and cell phones. Please send them in and put them in the Box Top Box in the school foyer.

STUDENTS GET CREATIVE WITH THE 2007-2008 REFLECTIONS PROGRAM
"I CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE BY"... is the inspiring theme for the National Reflections Program. Participating students can interpret this theme in 6 creative categories: LITERATURE, PHOTOGRAPHY, VISUAL ARTS (Example: drawing, painting, collage and printmaking), FILM/VIDEO, DANCE and MUSIC! Don't limit yourself to just 1 category! Last year we had a record breaking number of Reflections entries. Each one was unique and they were all phenomenal creative efforts. The judges for our school entries are all professionals in those fields and they were highly impressed by the efforts last year. There are 4 levels of competition where the 4 winners in each category proceed to the next level: first is your school, then county, state and finally national. Award ceremonies and certificates of participation and winner placement are given out at each level. Those dates will be announced. Along with those honors is the extra credit that your teachers give for completed entries by the deadline date. Please ask ALL your teachers whether they are giving extra credit. Simple rule/participation forms will be available in the front office along with a drop box for completed entries and forms. It is extremely important to fill out your Title and brief Artist Statement on your forms. START DATE: OCTOBER 8TH/DEADLINE: DECEMBER 10TH.
Don't hesitate to call with any questions. Be sure to visit: www.pta.org/local_leadership_subprogram_1116958614281.html for more information and to view last years winning entries. The Reflections Committee is looking forward to seeing all your creativity in interpreting the theme "I CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE BY"...
