Dear Friends and Families of Lime Kiln Middle School,
This was an exciting week as Ed Reed from the Ravens came to LKMS to kickoff the What Moves U fitness challenge for our sixth graders. The American Heart Association and the Ravens organization have teamed up to organize a 10-week challenge. Students will be expected to do 30 minutes of activity three days a week to qualify for weekly drawings for prizes donated by the Ravens. Debra Lange, Physical Education teacher, did an exceptional job setting this up for our students.
This week, as we continue through the 25 Rules of Civility from the book, Choosing Civility by P. M. Forni, we focus on Rule 8: Accept and Give Praise. Here are some highlights from that chapter:
Congratulations to several of Mr. Walls students that made the GT and Enrichment Orchestra! GT Orchestra students are Sean Kim, Taylor Paek, and John Park. The Enrichment Orchestra will include Quinten Armacost, Judy Lee, Jason Yoon, Carey Locke, and Jennifer Shin.
On Wednesday, LKMS will send teams of students to participate in the Envirothon. This is the third year we have participated in this outstanding countywide event for middle level students. A special thank you to Mrs. Spillman and all of our science teachers for working so hard to prepare our students.
Sincerely,
Brenda Thomas
THE RULES OF CIVILITY
ÒIn the Middle Ages the bestowing of praise was looked upon as a characteristic of the magnanimousÑthe noble at heart. It was obvious then, just as it is now, that praise we give to others flows, at least in part, from a transcending of our Selves. The inclination to express sincere praise (as opposed to flattery) continues to be a most captivating character trait of the civil.Ó
ÒExperts on manners have provided instruction on how to handle praise. A ÔcomplimentÕ is a gift, one we are expected to acknowledge with the simple courtesy of a firm and felt ÒThank you.Ó All too often, we add self-deprecating remarks. That is almost like returning a gift we didnÕt like. Of course, we should never solicit more praise than we were given, e.g., ÒI was good, wasnÕt I. Should we receive by mistake compliments that belong to others, we will give credit where it is due.Ó
PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCESÉLime Kiln Middle School will once again be using the Pick A Time program for scheduling conferences on November 19, 20 and 21. A letter will be going home with the students on November 1st explaining how to access the program. In order to schedule conferences you will need your studentsÕ ID number which is located on the top of the conference letter.

The PTA is sponsoring a Sixth Grade Team Building Icebreaker Event to be held at Lime Kiln on Thursday, November 1st from 3:10 until 5:00 p.m. This event entails numerous team building activities for the students similar to those that are held at Outdoor Ed. Various parents felt our sixth graders could use activities that would help bring them together as a team. much In order for this event to be successful, we are in need of 15-20 parents who are willing to help run these various activities. If you are available and willing to help with this event the afternoon of November 1st, please e-mail Sherri Tatum at statum1@verizon.net or Jeanne Lineberry at jeanne_lineberry@verizon.net by no later than October 26, 2007. STUDENTS GET CREATIVE WITH THE 2007-2008 REFLECTIONS PROGRAM
"I CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE BY"... is the inspiring theme for the National Reflections Program. Participating students can interpret this theme in 6 creative categories: LITERATURE, PHOTOGRAPHY, VISUAL ARTS (Example: drawing, painting, collage and printmaking), FILM/VIDEO, DANCE and MUSIC! Don't limit yourself to just 1 category! Last year we had a record breaking number of Reflections entries. Each one was unique and they were all phenomenal creative efforts. The judges for our school entries are all professionals in those fields and they were highly impressed by the efforts last year. There are 4 levels of competition where the 4 winners in each category proceed to the next level: first is your school, then county, state and finally national. Award ceremonies and nertificates of participation and winner placement are given out at each level. Those dates will be announced. Along with those honors is the extra credit that your teachers give for completed entries by the deadline date. Please ask ALL your teachers whether they are giving extra credit. Simple rule/participation forms will be available in the front office along with a drop box for completed entries and forms. It is extremely important to fill out your Title and brief Artist Statement on your forms. START DATE: OCTOBER 8TH/DEADLINE: DECEMBER 10TH.
Don't hesitate to call with any questions. Be sure to visit: www.pta.org/local_leadership_subprogram_1116958614281.html for more information and to view last years winning entries. The Reflections Committee is looking forward to seeing all your creativity in interpreting the theme "I CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE BY"...

Direct Donation - It's not too late to get that end of the year tax donation while supporting one of your favorite causes, your children. LKMS PTA is still seeking direct donations to support the many programs and services it offers your children and teachers. Our PTA estimates that it spends $60 a year for every child, and every dollar of your donation goes directly to those services. If you do not like to sell or fundraise, this is a perfect option for you to show your support to your school. You can make your check payable to LKMS PTA and place it in an envelope marked Direct Donation -PTA and have your child give it to their homeroom teacher. You will receive a tax receipt for your donation from the school. Any questions, please feel free to e-mail or call Leanne Glueck at lglueck@earthlink.net, 301-604-7150.
