Dear Friends and Families of Lime Kiln Middle School,
Thanks to Mrs. Spillman and all the teachers and students who participated in the annual Enrichment Fair Wednesday evening. The event is more amazing every year!
We are also very proud of sixth grader, Caroline DesJardin-Park! She was honored last weekend at the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth Talent Search Awards Ceremony. She achieved the highest verbal, quantitative and combined scores of any sixth grader in Maryland. What an achievement!
ItÕs that time of year again when the weather gets warmer and the dress guidelines need to be revisited. Please make sure the girls are not wearing short shorts, skirts, low necklines and tank tops. For the boys, we ask them to wear pants that are not so low they show their underwear. There is also a trend for boys to wear their belts so they hang over the crotch area. That is inappropriate for an academic environment. I would appreciate your support as we address these issues.
Thanks to the PTA for ordering up a perfect golf day last Friday for their annual tournament! It was so much fun. Also, as usual, they have outdone themselves for Teacher Appreciation Week. We have had a great time competing in the ÒOlympicsÓ!
You make every one of us feel special.
Sincerely,
Brenda Thomas
Our students of the week are Danny Kaiser, Monica Abraham, William Yeboah, Molly Miller, Keyon Pinnock, John Bialick and Laura Ryan.
COMING SOON...LKMS First Annual Fine Arts Festival, May 15th starting at 6 pm. Put this wonderful Arts event on your calendar. Stay tuned for more information!

Bow Ties and Cummerbunds
The LKMS Music Department will be retiring our current band and orchestra uniform of the bow tie and cummerbund. The last concert that we will use the Òold uniformÓ is the Spring Concert on May 12th at 7:00 in Reservoir High SchoolÕs auditorium. In the 2008-2009 school year, we will be unveiling a newer and fresher uniform that doubles as a concert uniform AND Hershey Park uniform. Families will no longer need to buy 2 separate uniforms. All Band, Chorus and Orchestra members will have the same unifying uniform.
We are asking that families and students donate the old ties and cummerbunds back to LKMS after the concert on May 12th so that we can donate them to a school in need that does not have any band uniforms. It can really brighten another programÕs day. So PLEASE send in your ties and cummerbunds to Mr. Jackowski AFTER May 12th. Thanks in advance for your generosity.
Book Fair News
Lime KilnÕs Spring Book Fair is scheduled from Friday May 9th through Thursday May 15th. The Book Fair will stay open Thursday evening May 15th from 5:30-8:30 to coincide with the Arts Festival. Students are scheduled to visit the Book Fair through their reading classes. To promote the Book Fair, there will be daily drawings for $5.00 book coupons that can be used to purchase books. The purpose of our Fair is to encourage our students to add to their personal libraries and to stock up for summer reading. Please encourage your student to participate. The sixth grade classes are scheduled for Friday the 9th and Monday the 12th and the other classes follow throughout the week. Any profits from our fair will be used to purchase updated reference books and additional equipment, like a desktop camera.

Choose Civility Symposium
Howard County Library and 40 Choose Civility partners cordially invite you to a Choose Civility Symposium, featuring U.S. Representative Elijah Cummings and keynote speaker Joe Ehrmann. Former Baltimore Colts defensive lineman and co-founder of Building Men and Women for Others, Ehrmann will emphasize how empathy, integrity, and relationships are more important than anything else in life.
Attend the symposium to learn how the Choose Civility campaign -- featured on WAMU's Kojo Nnamdi Show, WYPR's Midday Show, WUSA-TV, WTOP radio, The Baltimore Sun, The Washington Post, the Christian Science Monitor, and The Wall Street Journal -- is gaining international visibility.
