Dear Friends and Families of Lime Kiln Middle School,
Welcome back from spring break! The last day of the third marking period is April 4th, which is a 3-hour early dismissal day. Please check TeacherEase for the most current progressive report.
The Maryland School Assessment (MSA) will be administered on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week in Math. The following week, April 8th and 9th, will be the Reading assessment. Please make sure your student is well rested, has had breakfast and is on time to school. The Science MSA will be given to eighth graders only April 28-May 2.
Congratulations to Daniel Geldorf and Michelle Seu who are being published next month in a publication of the American Cichlid Association. Additionally, they are being contacted regarding future publications. This opportunity has come about through their involvement in the Aqua Havens program.
Aqua Havens can also be proud of their successful spawning of one species of fish extinct in the wild from Lake Victoria, Africa and one species at risk from Madagascar. As a result, LKMS has been named the Flagship School for the USA. They are communicating with public aquariums across the country.
This week, as we continue through the 25 Rules of Civility from the book, Choosing Civility by P. M. Forni, we focus on Rule 23: Accept and give constructive criticism. Here are highlights from that chapter:
This weekend, 13 of our eighth graders will be competing in the Maryland History Day countywide competition at Reservoir High School. Also, three of our eighth gradersÑJohn Bialick, Nikhil Gulati and Steven WardÑwill be representing LKMS at the Regional Science Fair in Towson. Good luck to all of them!
Sincerely,
Brenda Thomas
Our students of the week are: Laurie Nesbitt, TJ Willard, Albert Chung, Laura Yawney, Joey Milici and Michelle Seu.
THE RULES OF CIVILITY
Rule 23: Accept and give constructive criticism.
To make your criticism constructive and effective:
*Identify an issue, rather than launching an attack. Consider prefacing your critical remarks with positive ones.
*Describe what you have observed rather than uttering accusations or engaging in name-calling.
*Show that you understand how the other person may feel. DonÕt forget, however, that your focus is not on past similar situations but on the present & the future.
*Suggest a solution if you feel this is the right time to do so. You may also volunteer to work toward finding one.
*Remain calm, kind, and empathic throughout the exchange. End on a positive note: ÒThis is not the end of the world, just something to take care of.Ó
ItÕs almost impossible not to enjoy the sense of validation that comes with praise, but it is criticism that makes us learn what we are unable or unwilling to learn by ourselves.
When we turn our back on good criticism we do so at our own peril.
MARK YOUR CALENDARS! CMS PTA and PEN are sponsoring a parent workshop on Cyber Communities: Virtual Social Lives Have Real-Life Consequences. This interactive program will be lead by Katie George from the Howard County Library, and will include a step-by-step demonstration on navigating Facebook, the predominate online social networking site our kids already know all about. You won't want to miss it! Thursday, April 10, 7- 8:30 in the CMS cafeteria. Please RSVP to shila815@gmail.com.
BIG TIME COMMUNITY PROGRAM
On May 1st,, from 7:00 Ð 8:30, the Lime Kiln Middle School Youth Development Center is proud to announce a family evening with Keynote Speakers Chris Warner, whose NBC film on climbing K2 has just been nominated for an Emmy Award, and Dr. Leisha A. Emens, lead researcher from the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins. They each will present an inspiring message of hope and accomplishment. The mountaineer and the cancer researcher are teaming together for this program entitled CLIMB FOR HOPE in which cancer survivors will be led by an Earth Treks Climbing Team as they climb Mt. Kilimanjaro this June. We urge you to reserve this night on your calendar as there will be activities for youngsters at this family event and world class presentations of inspiration. More information will follow soon.
SERVICE LEARING NEWS
The Aqua Havens After School group is proud to announce its successful spawning of one species of fish extinct in the wild from Lake Victoria, Africa and one species Òat riskÓ from Madagascar. The excitement is building around the program success, as LKMS has just been named the Flagship School for the USA for a program to be entitled ÒAqua Havens C.A.R.E.S.Ó This dedicated after school group is now communicating and serving Public Aquariums across the country and truly making a difference. The 2000 gallons of Aquariums they monitor and maintain are soon to take in 6 new species of fish that are on the ICUN Endangered Species list.
Watch for our last quarter sign up opportunity that will continue the Rocketry and Aqua Havens Programming, as well as offer for the first time ÒHow to Play BridgeÓ led by Principal Brenda Thomas. All the programs can boast ties to national programming.
YOUTH DEVELOPMENT CENTER (YDC)
One of the goals of the Youth Development Center is to provide LKMS youth with unique and exciting opportunities outside the school. We are proud to announce that Daniel Geldof of Aqua Havens and Michelle Sue are both to be published next month in the Buntasche Bulletin publication of the American Cichlid Association. They are stepping up and setting dynamic precedents for youth as they both have already been contacted about future publications.
The Youth Development Center is also pleased to announce the onset of videoconferencing with experts in their field. To support student research projects and the after school programming, we have successfully had live conferences with the Smithsonian Institution and mountaineers from the Earth Treks Climbing Centers. We now have scheduled additional conferences with the National Aquarium of Baltimore, Maryland Sea Grant and the officers of the American Cichlid Association. Work is even underway to secure approval for videoconferencing with researchers in the jungles of Panama and with schools on the shores of Lake Victoria in Africa. It is an exciting time as LKMS students begin to utilize our new Youth Development Communications Center.
Finally, students are also working with LKMS staff to complete the Green Schools application for the State of Maryland. As with all of our YDC activities, it is a team effort. Have your student join a team!

Tickets are $10 general admission, $7 students and senior citizens. Call 410-888-8850 for tickets and information.
From the PTA:
STAFF APPRECIATION WEEK is fast approaching! Our annual week-long celebration of our teachers and staff will be held May 5 through May 9, 2008. Please join in the planning of what we hope to be, a fun filled week. If you would like to help in some way, please contact Moira at (410) 531-6752 or mdmonks@comcast.net. There is much to do; so many hands will be needed. Thank you in advance for your help.
LKMS PTA ISO a membership person for next school year. This is a very important position in the PTA. Most of the time commitment is an Aug-Oct. time frame. The duties include: having materials (membership flyers/envelopes) completed and ready to go home in the first day folders, picking up membership forms/dues from the school office on a regular basis at the beginning of the school year and off and on through March, compiling a list of all members, printing membership cards for those who have joined the PTA and getting them to the members, and forwarding monies to the Treasurer in order to pay the MD PTA for memberships sold. Please contact Jeanne Lineberry for more information -- jeanne_lineberry@verizon.net or (301) 317-1766. Plenty of information can be provided, and I will be happy to provide guidance.
