Dear Friends and Families of Lime Kiln Middle School,
Great news in the Lime Kiln community! Several of our students have excelled in extracurricular activities recently. Congrats to them and their families!
Two students participated in the HersheyÕs Track & Field Meet last weekend.
Thilina Silva won the golf medal placing first in the 100 meter dash and TreÕ Tatum placed second in the same event! Also, Thilina won the softball throw for boys 13-14. Both students will now advance to the Maryland State Hershey Meet on July 5th.
Luke Roarty recently returned from the BMX Bike Championships in China.
We are proud to announce that he won third place for his age group. What an accomplishment!!!
Thanks to our wonderful parents who attended the Volunteer Luncheon on Tuesday. You have been such a great support to our school. We are especially sad to see our eighth grade parent volunteers move on to high school. You will be sorely missed!
Thanks to our eighth graders for the outstanding service learning they recently completed. In under a month, the eighth graders raised just under $3000 for Heifer International. The students then voted on what to use their money for and they voted to buy two sheep, six goats, two llamas, one heifer and one water buffalo. Heifer International has programs in 40 countries and place the animals according to need. Thanks to Melissa Preston and Brian Richards who led this worthwhile effort.
We are looking forward to the eighth grade boat trip this Friday and the celebration Wednesday evening. It is hard to believe three years have passed so quickly.
I know this class will make a difference as they move from adolescence into adulthood.
Sincerely,
Brenda Thomas
Our students of the week are: James Kennedy, Alyssa Steinhorn, Dakota Wells, Taylor Peterson, and Carrie DeBlasis.

LIME KILN MS AGAIN REACHES TO THE SUMMIT
Lime Kiln MS, and its partner The Earth Treks Climbing Centers, this week will again feature open communications between a team of climbers from the summit of the highest peak in Africa, Mt. Kilimanjaro, and the classrooms of Lime Kiln Middle School. In the summer of 2007, Lime Kiln also reached out to the ETREKS K2 summit team, on the world's second
tallest peak with satellite transmissions just as we are doing this coming week when classes on June 10 and June 11 will have speaker phone conference at school with the CLIMB FOR HOPE TEAM who are summiting Mt. Kilimanjaro on either the 10th or the 11th, weather dependent. The full climbing team includes many Tanzania assistants, Earth Treks senior guides and people on the journey who have all raised thousands of dollars individually
for breast cancer research at Johns Hopkins University. Lime Kiln Middle School is proud to be a growing partner with Earth Treks and Johns Hopkins research through our Youth Development Center and Service Learning Programs. Watch in the fall of 2009 for the Shared Summits Program and Youth Development Center activities that will occur during the in 2009-2010 school year. Preparations are already underway for Lime Kiln's own local CLIMB FOR HOPE/SHARED SUMMITS PROGRAM and real time videoconferences with leading mountaineers and experts from all around the world.
