Dear Friends and Families of Lime Kiln Middle School,

Today, the interim reports are being sent home with the students.  Please review their grades and continue to follow the reports on TeacherEase.  This is a critical time of year because students who are not being successful are being considered for retention or summer school.

Last weekend, the Howard County Science Fair was postponed due to the weather conditions.  As a result, our 18 eighth graders will be competing at Reservoir High School this weekend. We wish them good luck and look forward to hearing the results.

The sixth graders enjoyed hearing the author, Kate Campbell Stevenson, this week.  Her show, Women Into the Future, was outstanding.  Thanks to the PTA Cultural Arts Chairperson, Mrs. Stanley, for sponsoring this annual performance.

This week, as we continue through the 25 Rules of Civility from the book, Choosing Civility by P. M. Forni, we focus on Rule20:  Be a considerate guest.  Here are highlights from that chapter:

                                                                        Sincerely,
                                                                        Brenda Thomas

THE RULES OF CIVILITY

Rule 20:  Be a considerate guest.

In the age of email & cell phones, there is no excuse for arriving unannounced at a friendÕs home.  When invited to a dinner or a party, respect both times of arrival & of departure.  DonÕt overstay your welcome, but donÕt leave too soon.  Rely on common sense & on your hostsÕ cues.

It is your hostsÕ prerogative to open the party to children.  DonÕt lobby for special permission.  If you do that, you put undue pressure on your hosts.

Never assume that Fido or Boots are welcome.

Never force an invitation.

Few things would gratify me as much as a rediscovered respect for things belonging to others.  Not abusing the property of others (or of the community) is one of the ways in which we respect others.  It is an essential part of being considerate guest, no matter where we are:  in an airplane, in a friendÕs home, in a theater, in a doctorÕs office, or in a public square.

Our students of the  week are:  Rachel Protzko, Jason Chen, Michael Nguyen, Richard Huerta, Sanjay Variyamm Ashley Jaiswal, and Christian Sohn.

COFFEE & CONVERSATIONÉCoffee and Conversation with the Board of Education will be held on Wednesday, March 12, 2008, 7:30 Ð 9:00 p.m., Media Center at Fulton Elementary School, 11600 Scaggsville Road, Fulton.

From the PTA:

Popcorn, Soda, and a Movie

Three hundred and ninety-six students were treated to popcorn, soda, and a movie by the PTA in celebration of making the honor roll for the second quarter.  Fifteen of those students (5 per grade) were the lucky winners of a drawing for movie passes and movie-sized candy.  Congratulations to all our students for their academic accomplishments!  Thanks to all the parents who supported the event:  Barb and Jeff Slayton, Sherri Tatum, Leanne Glueck, Diane Thometz, Tonya Howes, Kathy Liu, Moira Monk, Juli Bogdash, and Gail Timmick.  We also owe an extra-special thanks to Jeff and Sue Troll who donated the use of their popcorn machine and all the popcorn as well.

Parent Social Event:
Invitations for the Parent Social Event which will be held on Friday, March 28, 2008 from 7:30-11:30pm at The Gathering Place in River Hill went home on Friday in a large manila envelope in your child's backpack.  Please ask your child to check their backpack to pass this important information on to you. This night is sure to be a night to remember for parents, teachers and staff of both Lime Kiln Middle School and Fulton Elementary. There will be a great dinner, live classic rock music by a well known local band, Mispent Youth, and auction items to benefit the educational enrichment for our children. Please gather old friends, new friends and rock on over to the The Gathering Place on March 28th!!  Any questions, please contact Diane Thometz, 301-854-9730, dithometz@aol.com or Leanne Glueck, 301-604-7150, lglueck@earthlink.net
