Dear Friends and Families of Lime Kiln Middle School,
Thanks to all of you who attended parent-teacher conferences. The partnerships that are created in these sessions are what make our childrenÕs education effective and successful.
Please continue to work with our teachers and use the online gradebook tool, TeacherEase, to keep up-to-date on your studentÕs grades.
This week, as we continue through the 25 Rules of Civility from the book, Choosing Civility by P. M. Forni, we focus on Rule 18: Avoid Personal Questions. Below are highlights from that chapter.
Thank you to Barbara Slayton, our PTA mom that has organized the honor roll incentives. This quarter, the students will be treated to popcorn and sodas as they watch a brief movie the last thirty minutes of the day. Nearly 400 students will be honored. Thanks to all of you who have volunteered to help out with this very worthwhile activity!
Thanks also to all the parents and students who participated and supported the annual musical production. It was outstanding!
Sincerely,
Brenda Thomas
THE RULES OF CIVILITY
Rule 18: Avoid personal questions.
The incomparable Miss Manners wonders in one of her books why a common, polite invitation such as ÒIf there is anything you want to know, donÕt hesitate to askÓ should make her nervous. It does, she decides, because many people are all too ready to ask indiscreet personal questions: ÒOf course you should hesitate. It should be a pause long enough to ask yourself, ÔIs this any of my business? Could this question hurt the other personÕs feelings? Could it seem to suggest something offensive about that person?ÕÓ It is in this very hesitation, in this exercise of discretion, that civility resides.
Here are a few formulas with which you can defend you privacy: ÒI donÕt feel comfortable talking about this,Ó ÒThis is too big a question to be quickly addressed right now,Ó ÒThis isnÕt the best time to discuss this topic,Ó ÒI prefer not to discuss personal matters.
Our students of the week are: David Hessler, Eliza Stubbings, Emily Love, Alex Wollack, Tyler Schultz, Silas Dustin, and Sara Mule
LKMS has received applications for the Journey 2008 program being sponsored by the WomenÕs Giving Circle of Howard County and implemented by Maryland Leadership Workshops. This program is an opportunity for present 7th-11th grade girls to come together this summer for one week (July 20-26) at Washington College to develop their self-image, confidence and interpersonal skills.
The program is intended for girls who have already demonstrated an interest in formal or informal leadership roles, a desire to serve their community, a willingness to work cooperatively with others, and an ability to take risks in a safe setting. The girls are divided into two sub-groups: one for incoming 8th-9th graders and one for 10th-12th graders.
Marcy Leonard, Principal of Atholton High School, will be serving as a staff member at the program. Applications are available in the guidance office and are due March 14th. Please contact the guidance office if you are interested. This is an outstanding leadership experience for our middle school girls.
From the PTA:
Box Tops for Education: February 28th is the last day to submit box tops for this year so please try to bring them in before the deadline so that LKMS will get the cash this year. The collection box is located in the vestibule outside of the office
