Dear Friends and Families of Lime Kiln Middle School,

Congratulations to Kyle Bachman!  Kyle and his family had the pleasure of receiving an invitation to MarylandÕs 2008 Letters About Literature Awards Ceremony at the Enoch Pratt Free Library on April 19th.  He was one of 32 students from the state of Maryland, and the only student from Howard County (Grades 7-8) who was named as a finalist.  Kyle was recognized for the letter he wrote to author Carl Hiaasen about Flush as part of a Challenge Reading assignment in Ms. EcksteinÕs class.

Join us this Thursday night for our first Climb for Hope Family Night at 7 p.m.  We are very excited to welcome Maryland Climber Chris Warner who will be speaking about his experiences climbing to the summit of K2 last summer.  Johns Hopkins researcher Leisha Emens will also be speaking about her cancer research to create a vaccine for women and girls to fight breast cancer.  Families who donate to Climb for Hope will receive a ribbon and have their names on a flag what will be taken to Mt. Kilimanjaro in June.  100% of the eveningÕs proceeds will be donated to the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins.

This Friday, the PTA is sponsoring their annual Golf outing at Hampshire Greens in Montgomery County.  We look forward to this fun and worthwhile activity!

                                                            Sincerely,
                                                            Brenda Thomas

Our students of the week are:  Riley Monahan, Lauren Knoblett, James Riffle, Sarah Riffle and Kate Schramek.

The Enrichment Fair is coming May 7, 2008. Please plan to attend this wonderful event that showcases outstanding studentsÕ work. There are also live presentations that highlight the many enriching opportunities that Lime Kiln has to offer. The evening starts promptly with a Gallery Walk of classroom displays and presentations from 6:30 pm to 7:00 pm. At 6:50 there will be a brief broadcast from the Leopard Spot Television Studio to give an overview of the live presentations. From 7:00 until 8:00 there are live presentations happening simultaneously. Parents should accompany their child to the fair because this is a family event. Come and see our talented students, stay connected to your childÕs school and learn how your child can be involved. Check the website for a complete schedule of activities. We look forward to seeing you at ÒThe Stars of Lime Kiln Come Out to ShineÓ Enrichment Fair.
                                                            Sincerely,
                                                            Tracy Spillman, G/T Resource Teacher

Bow Ties and Cummerbunds
The LKMS Music Department will be retiring our current band and orchestra uniform of the bow tie and cummerbund. The last concert that we will use the Òold uniformÓ is the Spring Concert on May 12th at 7:00 in Reservoir High SchoolÕs auditorium.  In the 2008-2009 school year, we will be unveiling a newer and fresher uniform that doubles as a concert uniform AND Hershey Park uniform.  Families will no longer need to buy 2 separate uniforms.  All Band, Chorus and Orchestra members will have the same unifying uniform.

We are asking that families and students donate the old ties and cummerbunds back to LKMS after the concert on May 12th so that we can donate them to a school in need that does not have any band uniforms.  It can really brighten another programÕs day.  So PLEASE send in your ties and cummerbunds to Mr. Jackowski AFTER May 12th.  Thanks in advance for your generosity.

Book Fair News

Lime KilnÕs Spring Book Fair is scheduled from Friday May 9th through Thursday May  15st.  The Book Fair will stay open Thursday evening May 15th from 5:30-8:30 to coincide with the Arts Festival.  Students are scheduled to visit the Book Fair through their reading classes.  To promote the Book Fair, there will be daily drawings for $5.00 book coupons that can be used to purchase books.  The purpose of our Fair is to encourage our students to add to their personal libraries and to stock up for summer reading.  Please encourage your student to participate.  The sixth grade classes are scheduled for Friday the 9th and Monday the 12th and the other classes follow throughout the week.  Any profits from our fair will be used to purchase updated reference books and additional equipment, like a desktop camera.
