Dear Friends and Families of Lime Kiln Middle School,

Next week, TeacherEase will be open to parents so you will be able to access your childÕs grades.  You should have already received your welcome email.  If you have not, please contact Bob Keddell (rkeddell@hcpss.org).  Also, posted on the LKMS website are explicit directions for accessing using TeacherEase.  There are expectations for both parents and teachers to facilitate this process.

The parent expectations are as follows:

  1. Parents can review their studentsÕ homework grades weekly.  Homework grades will be posted within one week after the assignment is collected.
  2. Parents can review the grades for tests and projects within two weeks after the due date.  If teachers cannot meet the 2-week deadline, the teacher will notify both students and parents by either a TeacherEase email or a notice on their TeacherWeb website.
  3. Parents should speak to the student first about a grade before contacting the teacher.  Encourage students to advocate for themselves regarding academic grading concerns.
  4. Major assignment grades, e.g., tests, projects, will be reviewed with students before they are posted for parents.
  5. Teachers will do their best to respond to emails from parents within two days, excluding weekends and days off from school.  Please remember that teachers have the responsibility for over 100 students.

Please support the annual PTA magazine fundraiser!  A special thank you to all the parents who come in on collection and prize days!  We are also having several homeroom competitionsÑthe Ice Cream Party race is on!  This weekÕs winners are Mr. Jackowski (6th), Mr. Shifflett (7th grade) and Ms. Johnson (8th grade).  The overall winner this week was Mr. AmsheyÕs homeroom so the Big Snake was moved from Mr. ShifflettÕs room to Mr. AmsheyÕs room.  Keep up the good work!!!

After School activities are coming soon!  Next week, a couple of the intramurals are starting and most Youth Development Center activities will be starting the first week in October.  Look for announcements in the LeopardÕs Tale and listen for announcements on the morning news show.  Pamphlets will be available at Back to School Night that give more details for the after school programs.

                                                                        Sincerely,
                                                                        Brenda Thomas

Out students of the week are:  Joe Bednarik, Luke Frascarella, Courtney Colosimo, Victoria LaFemina, Davis Fisher, Scott Lee and Julia Na.

FLAG FOOTBALLÉMr. Waltman and Mr. Jackson will start intramural football on Wednesday, September 17th.  Football will continue on Wednesdays through October 15th with the exception of Wednesday, October 8th.  Each of the scheduled dates has football running from 3:15-4:45 p.m. Some teams may be finished at 4:30 so we ask parents to start arriving by 4:30 p.m.  Any student that doesn't have a ride after 4:45 p.m. cannot return to intramural football.   Intramural football consists of team flag football with skills and an occasional guest speaker.  All games will be played outside on the fields between Lime Kiln and Fulton elementary school.  The teams will be divided up with each grade level and set up coeducationally between the boys and the girls.  Registration takes place in the lunchroom.   Any student that missed registration may see Mr. Jackson personally in his room (Room 6) before or after school.  Registration will be limited.

For all the students to participate that would like too, the teachers are asking for assistance from any parent volunteers that can help us.  Ideally we would have about 4 each of the days we run the football program.  We need volunteers to help us referee the games,   watch the facilties and help with any students that may need a band-aid or medical assistance.  Please contact Mr. Jackson at hjackson@hcpss.org if you can assist us by volunteering for at least one football Wednesday!

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT CENTER UPDATE

The Youth Development Center is off and running.  This week we are having signups for the Wednesday and Thursday afternoon Aqua Havens CARES Service Learning  Program.  See Mr. Shifflett or Mr. Keddell for an application form with complete details.

Bridge is back!  Do people tell you you have great card sense?  Learn to play the greatest card game ever inventedÑthe game Bill Gates & Warren Buffett, two of the worldÕs biggest billionaires, canÕt get enough of.  They have invested millions of dollars to teach young people the game of bridge. Last spring, LKMS started the first Bridge program for middle schoolers in the county.  We will play on Wednesdays after school from 3:15-5 p.m. The first session will be Wednesday, Oct. 8th.  Sign ups will be in the cafeteria starting next week.  We are especially looking for 6th and 7th graders to join us.  Snacks are offered at every session.  Join Ms. Thomas for a ton of fun that will last your whole lifetime!

Watch this space for an exciting opportunity for young actors and actresses.  To be led by a professional local Shakespearean actress, students will experience the Bard as Shakespeare intended.  With Masks, scene study and original staging discussions, all participants will have great fun with language.  All levels of experience will be welcome.  Acting action will be on Tuesdays from 3:30 - 4:30 Nov. 4 Ð Dec. 9 and includes a service to the community performance opportunity at the Maple Lawn Community Center.  Fee is $36 payable to the PTA.  The enrollment limit is 12 students

DonÕt miss the Back to School night flyer that will detail additional programs detailing Youth Development activities and our schoolÕs intramural offerings.

Direct Donations - Direct Donation Letters and Envelopes came home the first day of school and can be sent in with your child to their homeroom teacher. The PTA provides many valuable services for you and your children at Lime Kiln Middle School.  To be able to provide these services, the PTA raises money throughout the school year with several different fundraisers.  One alternative the PTA offers those families who do not wish to participate in fundraisers or do not have the time to sell is direct donation. The PTA estimates that it spends $60.00 a year for each child on items such as helping to purchase TeacherEase, the grading program so many parents and students rely on, as well as over $10,000 worth of PTA cultural arts events such as drug and smoking awareness.  Your donation is completely tax deductible and you will receive a receipt acknowledging your gift.  Donations of any size are welcome, and every dollar will be used to support our students and teachers. If you have any questions, please contact Leanne Glueck, lglueck@earthlink.net, 301-604-7150

Box Top$ for Education Ð Support Lime Kiln Middle School by clipping those box tops and dropping them in the box in the entry way near the office.  Each box top is worth 10 cents so start clipping!!!!!  First collection will take place in October.
