Dear Friends and Families of Lime Kiln Middle School,

On Tuesday and Wednesday, our students participated in a mock general election.  The students through their Social Studies classes voted privately for a presidential candidate.
We are grateful for the leadership and organization provided by Ms. Johnson, Mr. McMullin and Mrs. Colbert.  The student government also created posters, decorated ballot boxes and assisted with the organization.  Results were be announced next week after the general election.

Congratulations to the Envirothon teams!  They scored first in Forestry and another first in Soils!  Overall, they were second in the county, losing by one point.  We are very proud of their efforts.  Thanks to Mrs. Spillman and the LKMS Science team for preparing our teams.

Next Friday, November 7th, your child will be bringing home a letter that will provide the information needed to schedule parent conferences online using a site called PickATime.
The studentÕs identification number is required to use the program.  This will be attached to the letter.  A demonstration on how to register for conferences using this program will be aired the month of November on the Parent Teacher Connection show.  It will be aired on Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m., Saturday at 3 p.m. and Sunday at noon and 10 p.m.  It will be aired on HCPSS TV, Channel 95 on Comcast or Channel 42 on Verizon.

Today, all students our students participated in the Walk for Hope, a benefit for the Dr. Leisha EmenÕs cancer research through Johns Hopkins University.  Thank you to everyone in our community that supported this worthwhile endeavor.

                                                                        Sincerely,
                                                                        Brenda Thomas

Our students of the week are:  Patrick Evans, Jong Choi, Tara Thompason, Isabelle Kim, Kurt Weinheimer, Kyle McKee, Olivia Na, and Allison Krein.

Are your bookshelves bulging with paperback books that you are finished reading?  Would you like to add to your own personal library without spending any money?  The Lime Kiln Book Swap might be just the answer for you.  A Book Swap merely recycles books.  Students contribute a book and take home a book, usually chosen from a large selection. Keep reading and get the details!

When can students begin bringing in books?
Beginning Monday, November 17th, students may bring to school up to five paperback books.  Students will receive one coupon for each book to be traded.

Are there any rules about the books to be swapped?
¥  Books to be traded must be in good condition.
¥  Books must be appropriate for middle school readers.
(Some books may be rejected if they fail to meet these two guidelines).
¥  No Animorphs, Goosebumps, or BabysitterÕs Club will be swapped.
¥  Students may swap up to five books.

Where do students take books to get the coupons?
During homeroom or CorePlus, students may bring books to the media center and receive a bookswap coupon for each book accepted for the swap.

What if a coupon gets lost?
Be sure to write your name on each coupon and put it in a safe place.  Lost coupons cannot be replaced.

Exactly when does the trading begin?
Coupons may be redeemed (traded for books) during the week of November 17th, before school, during CorePlus, reading and other classes with the permission of the teacher.

Will the books be organized in any way?
Of course!  Books will be sorted into categories, depending on the books contributed. Most swaps have these categories:  Mystery, SciFi, Fantasy, Realistic Fiction, Quick Reads, Non-fiction, and Miscellaneous.

LKMS Parents:  Did you ever think, "I'd like to give the school system my 2 cents on that issue!"  Well, the PTA Council of Howard County is now recruiting for just that opportunity.  The PTAC is developing a Talent Bank.  Parents involved in the Talent Bank would be asked to review school policies on a rotating basis.  All HCPSS polices are reviewed every 3 years.  Policy review committees are made up of Parents, School Administrators, Teachers, citizens and members of the Board of Education.  The policies up for review this year include tobacco use, school closings, bullying/harassment/intimidation, and employee discipline.  Policy review committees usually meet once or twice for an hour or so.  Be part of this exciting opportunity, fill out the PTA Council Talent Skills information form that is below.  You can direct any questions to your LKMS PTAC representatives, Carol Zimmerman wcrnsz@comcast.net, or Ellen Makar eemakar@aol.com
