Dear Friends and Families of Lime Kiln Middle School,
On the front page of this weekÕs Baltimore Sun, Dr. Leisha EmensÕ research on breast cancer has been the focus of a six-part series. We are so proud to see her work highlighted. Dr. Emens has been an LKMS partner supporting our service learning program. Together with Chris Warner, Earth Treks CEO, they appeared last year to inspire our students and community with their dedication to helping others. On October 31st, our students will be conducting a ÒWalk for HopeÓ fundraising program through their related arts classes to benefit Dr. EmensÕ work with the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins University. For the second year, Ms. Bae, our art teacher, will design a flag that Dr. Emens will place at the summit of Mt. Cotopaxi in Ecuador in January.
In this weekÕs LeopardÕs Tale, our Guidance Department will focus on Internet Safety.
We definitely recommend that all parents to have a Facebook account to be able to monitor possible bullying behavior. Unfortunately, in this age of technology, parents have to be very vigilant of this type of behavior. Young adolescents will write comments they would never say out loud to others. Please read this important information.
This monthÕs Principal Leadership had an excellent article on fostering self-discipline by students. While correcting misbehavior is often necessary and appropriate, the goal of developing self-discipline should always be kept in the forefront. Listed below are three more valuable tips for parents.
TIP #4: Emphasize how misbehavior negatively affects others and the importance of acting responsibly.
TIP #5: Avoid harsh punishment. Physical punishment develops little self-discipline and simply teaches your child that itÕs OK to act aggressively and to try to avoid getting caught. Consider more thoughtful, effective forms of punishment, such as taking away privileges or services.
TIP #6: Your child might challenge your rules; listen to his or her concerns. Adolescents often have legitimate issues regarding the age appropriateness of rules that were effective when they were younger. Try to find fair and responsible middle ground and involve your child in rulemaking when possible.
Sincerely,
Brenda Thomas
Our students of the week are: Lauren Hessler, Sean Rogers, Sara Mule, Corbin Locke, Erin Pontius, Joseph Arias, and Kaede Johnson
Attendance and LatenessÉRegular attendance is extremely important for students to be academically successful. All students are expected to attend school regularly, and be here on time at 8:15 AM unless they are ill, or have extenuating circumstances. If your student is going to be absent, be sure to call the school to report this. Upon returning to school, all students should bring a note explaining why they were absent. The Guidance Office is happy to request work for students who miss 3 or more days in a row. If your child is absent 1 or 2 days you may use Teacherweb.com to stay caught up. Please make sure that every effort is made to schedule appointments outside of the school day.
WALK FOR HOPE - Download Flyer & Pledge Form
On October 31st, through related arts classes, our students will be conducting a
ÒWalk for HopeÓ fund raising program in cooperation with the Sidney Kimmel
Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins University and the Earth Treks Climbing
Centers. Specifically, 100% of the funds raised are to support the work of Dr.
Leisha Emens, whose work on a vaccine for breast cancer is featured daily for six
days this week on the front page of the Baltimore Sun. Dr. Emens and Earth Treks
CEO Chris Warner are LKMS partners supporting our service-learning program. Both
partners spoke at Lime Kiln last year and even planted a Lime Kiln Middle School
flag on the summit of Mt, Kilimanjaro in Africa last year and this year will be
planting a LKMS flag, made by our students in art club, on the summit of Mt.
Cotopaxi in Ecuador this January. Please take a few minutes to know the work of Dr.
Emens either in the newspapers or online at
http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/health/bal-te.vaccine12oct12,0,389862.story?page=2
..
We are in great appreciation of these two partners commitment to our students as
evidenced by their electronic connections to our schoolÕs service learning program
from both their place of work, from distant mountain peaks and by supporting our
schoolÕs acquisition of a climbing wall. Thank you Dr. Emens, lead researcher and
Chris Warner, world mountaineer.
