Book Talk Strategies

Below are the six strategies students have been taught to use during "Book Talk" both at school and at home. Use the poems to help refresh your child's memory about the strategies.

Clarifying / Summarizing / Predicting / Questioning / Connecting /Visualizing

Clarifying

Clarifying helps us, and this is why. It clears up problems in the blink of an eye.

Like how to pronounce a tricky word,

Or what’s the meaning for a word you’ve never heard.

It’s wrong to read on if you get stuck,

Take a second to clarify and you’ll be in luck.

Summarizing

When someone asks you, “what did you read?”

Summarizing helps you tell it with speed.

Think about the whole, which parts stood out?

Those are the ones you want to tell about.

Not too many details, keep it short and sweet

Then your summary will be complete!

Predicting

We’ll start by predicting, want to know why?

It gets us started, so give it a try!

Before you start reading anything new,

Think of what will happen, take a preview.

Keep on reading and think of what might come next,

This is what we call predicting the text!

Questioning

Questioning is the right thing to do,

‘Cause it makes you think and understand, too.

Just ask yourself questions as you read.

This strategy will help you, yes indeed!

Like, “What does this mean? Am I on the right track?”

“I wonder why?  Should I go back?”

I know asking questions really helps me,

‘Cause it’s a comprehension strategy.

Connecting

Good readers make connections to the story they are reading.

They use their background knowledge to help apply meaning.

Text-to-self has you connecting events in the book to yourself.

While text-to-text has you connecting to other books on your shelf.

Last, but not least, there is the text-to-world connection.

Think of something happening in the world that relates to your selection!

Visualizing

Read a good book and you will surely find,

You can create vivid images in your mind.

Mix the author’s words with your own imagination,

And you will have a visual creation.

Use your senses, apply what you know,

And your understanding of the text definitely will grow!
