Book Talk

For 30 minutes every day, students will be participating in this wonderful program.  They will begin by reading their self-selected book for 15 minutes.  At the end of this time, they will have one minute to use the “3 Word Strategy” to write down 3 words on a Post-It note that will help them summarize the passage they read that day.  Next, students get with a partner and TALK to them for 8 minutes (4 minutes for each partner) about what they read. Each student has been given a Book Talk agreement that they will follow each day. TALK stands for:

                                                Tell about your book

                                                Ask a question

Listen with your eyes and ears

                                                Know about a new book

After students complete their time with their partner, they will then join their teacher for a read aloud of a book they are reading to the class.  During the read aloud, the teacher will be modeling good reading strategies that students can apply to their own reading.

An important part of the “Book Talk” program is a home-school connection.  We are asking that each student read for 15 - 20 minutes each night, as we have always asked, and mark their time on their reading calendar.  In addition, we are asking students to use one of the reading strategies they have learned in class at least 3 times a week.  After they have done their reading for that day, they will need to ORALLY discuss their book with you using one of the 6 strategies.  You will then need to initial/sign the calendar on the day that they did their “Book Talk” with you.

The rhymes we have been using to help teach the students each of the 6 strategies can be found here.   Please use these to help your child share their book with you at home.  You will notice on their reading calendar that we have designated a different strategy for them to focus on each week – they can decide which 3 days they practice the strategy with you.
