5th Grade Spelling & Vocabulary Program
Students in fifth grade will be exposed to an integrated spelling and vocabulary program. Every student will be using a program developed by Zaner-Bloser called Word Wisdom. This program will help empower the students with vocabulary for effective communication. A simple instructional plan helps students take ownership of new vocabulary as they...
• Unlock words in meaningful context
• Process words through skill-based activities
• Apply words in listening, speaking, reading, and writing
• Review words frequently to reinforce their use and meaning
• Demonstrate their progress through regular assessment
Word Wisdom contains nine units of study and each unit has a theme, which ties all the words together. Each unit has four lessons - the first three have ten new words that follow the theme of the unit. The fourth lesson in each unit is a review of the previous three lessons. During a review week, students will not have spelling, they will only focus on the vocabulary and understanding the meanings of each word. Every Monday, each teacher will post the spelling and vocabulary homework on their board for students to copy into their homework planner. The students' vocabulary homework will be a page a night in their vocabulary workbook. Spelling homework for the first three lessons in each unit will be assigned as follows:
| Mondays | Write each vocabulary word 3 times. |
| Tuesdays | Practice spelling your vocabulary words orally. |
| Wednesdays | Write your vocabulary words in ABC order. |
| Thursdays | Have an adult give you a pretest, then they should correct it and sign it. |
**If the school week is shortened, please check your child's homework planner for the required spelling homework that week.
