Super 3 a Garden

 

Library Media Essential Curriculum Objectives

Goal 1: The student will demonstrate an appreciation of literature as a reflection of human experience and reading as a pleasurable activity.

The student will be able to:

a.      Identify relationships between text and situations in real life.

 

1.     Listen to, read, and discuss stories that provide examples of characters interacting with each other and solving problems that reflect human experiences.

         4.  Use informational materials to build background knowledge.

Materials

My Garden poem/finger play (LMTRSK.MyGarden.doc)

Eddie's garden and how to make things grow by Sarah Garland

         Directions for Paper Flower (LMTRS.HandFlowerK.doc)

Construction Paper, Scissors, Stapler, Glue Stick, Straws, Pencils

 

Pre-Assessment of Prior Knowledge

Students have discussed growing plants in content class.

 

Engagement

Share with students the poem/finger play, My Garden (LMTRSK.MyGarden.doc)

Have a vase filled with some sample finger flowers on hand.

 

Activity

1.  After sharing the finger play with students introduce the book Eddie's Garden and how to make things grow by Sarah Garland. Describes how Eddie, with help from his mother, planted and grew a garden, and concludes with information about how readers could grow their own gardens.  Or another story about planting a garden.

2.  Ask students if they think Eddie used the Super 3 to plant his garden - Plan, Do, Review.

    After several responses from students see if they can recite the Super 3 Song

3. - How could we use those steps to make a flower today, plant a flower garden for everyone at school?  We will work on the steps next week for the flower garden.

 

 

 

Transition

3.  Next ask the students to work through a Plan, Do, Review to create a finger flower - Reading to Perform a Task.

4.  Display the directions and have students volunteer to read through the PLAN. (LMTRSK.HandPrintFlower.doc)

 

Activity

5.  Direct students to move to tables where supplies are set up to create a hand print flower

6.  Assist those students who require additional help to create the flower.

7.  As students complete their hand print flower be available to staple the flower onto the straw.

 

Closure

8.  As the students line up to leave collect the flowers and place in a bunch to give to the Kindergarten teacher or allow students to take their hand print flower home.

 

Checking for Understanding Throughout the Lesson

As the students are working on their hand print flower the media specialist shall circulate among the students and ask the children what part of the Super 3 they are currently working with.

 

Assessment

All students will follow the directions to create a hand print flower.

Planning to Plant a Garden

Engagement

Share with students the nursery rhyme Mary, Mary Quiet Contrary.

 

Activity

1.  After sharing the finger play with students introduce the book Planting A Rainbow by  

     Lois Ehlert.  Or another story about planting a garden.

2.  After sharing the story use Kidspiration to create a web to visualize the PLAN the

      students think they will use to create their own garden.  This will make a list of materials

      to gather and or purchase.

 

Transition

3.  After students check out books have them complete the Student Resource Sheet which  

      is a Coloring Page of Mary, Mary Quite Contrary

 

Closure

4.  As the students line up to leave have them place the Student Resource Sheet into the completed workbasket.

 

Checking for Understanding Throughout the Lesson

As the students are working on their coloring page ask them what they think they will be DO-ing next week.

 

Assessment

All students will use at least three colors to complete the nursery rhyme coloring page of Mary, Mary Quite Contrary.

1.  After sharing the finger play with review the PLAN (via Kidspiration from last class).

2.  Gather the supplies to go outdoors and plant the seeds/flowers

3.  Have the students checkout books as a class before going outdoors to garden

3.  After students check out books have them proceed outside to create their garden following the PLAN.

4.  Follow the PLAN and plant the seeds/flowers in the garden

5.  If time permits read another gardening story.

As the students are following the PLAN to plant the garden REVIEW the steps with them.

A Vegetable Garden

Engagement

Share with students the story The Carrot Seed by Crockett Johnson.

 

Activity

1.  After sharing the story have students sequence events from the story.

2.  Next share the story Muncha, Muncha, Muncha .  After planting the garden he has dreamed of for years, Mr. McGreely tries to find a way to keep some persistent bunnies from eating all his vegetables.

 

Transition

3.  After students check out books have them proceed to the computer lab to complete an online coloring activity

 

Closure

4.  Link to the site http://www.surfnetkids.com/games/garden-cb.htm , and online coloring site with a vegetable garden theme.

 

Checking for Understanding Throughout the Lesson

As the students are coloring online ask them if they think Mr. McGreely has a PLAN.

All students will work online with the coloring pages.

If time permits have the students recite the finger plays for the Kindergarten Teacher.
