Tips for Applying for College

* Second half of sophomore year no later than spring of junior year: Compile a tentative list of colleges
you are interested in attending.
* Second half of sophomore year no later than spring of junior year: Make initial contact with the schools.
Send resume with cover letter, schedule of upcoming activies and for some sports a video tape.
* Junior year: Make unofficial visits to some of the schools on your list. If possible, contact and set-up a
meeting with the coach during these visits.
* Through out junior year: Periodically stay in touch with coaches at the schools that still interest you.
* End of junior year: If you are still interested, make another contact with the schools, send updated
Academic and sport related information, including a schedule of your upcoming summer participation
in tournaments, camps and/or leagues.
* Summer prior to senior year: Take every opportunity to participate in your sport to maximize your
exposure and increase your skills.
* Mid-Summer to Early Fall senior year: Fulfill NCAA Clearinghouse obligations. if your are
considering a Division I or II school.
* Mid-Summer to Early Fall senior year: Talk to college coaches about visits (official and unofficial)
* Fall of senior year: Schedule and make college visits, (official and unofficial)
* Early fall senior year: Study and consider information about Early Decision or maybe Early Action
admission to a college and Early Signing (of the National Letter of Intent) for athletic participation
and/or a scholarship.
* Early to late fall senior year: Decided what colleges to apply to and when to apply
* Before Winter Break senior year: Send completed applications and high school transcripts to colleges.
* Early Fall-Mid-Winter senior year: Decide when to verbally commit to a school and/or sign with a
School for a scholarship. When you have made your decision be sure to notify all schools recruiting
You and thank them for their interest. (This time frame may vary, check with your school of choice)

 

Academic and Athletic Goals: Academic major and/or program of study. Also, include information about the level of competition you are seeking in your sport. Only include information about your interest in pursing an athletic scholarship and/or your interest in seeking assistance in gaining admission . This information is usually best left out of a preliminary resume when sending to a number of schools, however , if you have already narrowed your list and have or will be making some contact with a school or coach it is appropriate to include this information.

Personal Data: Name, phone number, address, email address if available, birth date, year in school, name of school, height, weight, parent’s name (s).

Sports Background and Data: position, event (s), years of experience, where you have played, to included, High School, Club/AAU teams, tournaments, recent camps, and out of season leagues. Also, include a copy of your high school or Club/AAA team schedule and pertinent stats. If you have the information, a schedule of your summer and/or off season play should be included. If you have video tapes available let them know. If appropriate, also include information about your involvement in other sports.

Academic Information: Current GPA, class rank, current SAT or PSAT scores, if available, type of high school curriculum, (college prep, Honors, GT/AP, ect.).

Recognitions Received: Any significant honors or recognitions received, (All League, All American, All Metro, selection to All Star teams, ect.). Also, include information about your team’s accomplishments.

References: The names and contact information of coaches and/or other individuals who could serve as references or sources of information about your ability and/or level of play in the sport.
